''Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica'' is a sourcebook that details the ''Ravnica'' campaign setting for the 5th edition of the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game published in November 2018. The world of Ravnica was originally created for the ''Magic: The Gathering'' collectible card game and first appeared in the card set ''Ravnica: City of Guilds'', which was released in 2005. It is a high-magic world with a loose Slavic flavor, and features a single city which spans the entire planet that is controlled by ten competing guilds of different ideologies. Magali Villeneuve (born 1980) is a French illustrator, freelance fantasy artist, and fantasy author. Her art has been used for official games and products set in many large fantasy universes and franchises, including Magic: The Gathering, A Song of Ice and Fire, Star Wars, Warhammer, The Lord of the Rings, and Call of Cthulhu. Early life, education, and family Villeneuve was born in Bordeaux, France in 1980. She did not attend school to be an artist; instead, she is completely self-taught. The Origins Awards are American awards for outstanding work in the game industry. They are presented by the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design at the Origins Game Fair on an annual basis for the previous year, so (for example) the 1979 awards were given at the 1980 Origins. The Origins Award is commonly referred to as a Calliope, as the statuette is in the likeness of the muse of the same name. Academy members frequently shorten this name to "Callie". ''Guilds of Ravnica'' is the 79th ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion; while it is not part of a block, this set is functionally the first part of a Ravnica focused storyline set on the plane of Ravnica. It was released on October 5, 2018. Setting The ''Guilds of Ravnica'' and '' Ravnica Allegiance'' sets each focus on five out of the ten Ravnica guilds and the shared storyline creates the foundation for the story in the ''War of the Spark'' set. On this story design, Mark Rosewater highlighted that they wanted the Bolas Arc to "end with a big dramatic event" which required getting players to care that this event was occurring on Ravnica. Mike Mearls
Michael Mearls is a writer and designer of fantasy role-playing games (RPGs) and related fiction. He was the senior manager for the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' research and design team. He co-led design for the 5th edition of the game. He also worked on the '' Castle Ravenloft'' board game, and various compendium books for 3rd, 4th, and 5th editions ''Dungeons & Dragons''. Zendikar
The Zendikar block is a '' Magic: The Gathering'' block consisting of the sets ''Zendikar'' (October 2, 2009), ''Worldwake'' (February 5, 2010), ''Rise of the Eldrazi'' (April 23, 2010). The eponymous setting is a vast, untamed wilderness, whose few bastions of civilization exist primarily for outfitting treasure-seeking expeditions to distant locales. Colossal ancient octahedral stones called "hedrons" float in the sky (hedrons are the expansion symbols for all three blocks). A phenomenon known as "the Roil" causes frequent geological upheaval as it sweeps across the land. Kaladesh
''Kaladesh'' is a ''Magic: The Gathering'' expansion block consisting of the sets ''Kaladesh'' and ''Aether Revolt''. The block debuted with the release of ''Kaladesh'' on September 30, 2016. The block is set on the plane of Kaladesh, the original home of planeswalker Chandra Nalaar, and features an emphasis on artifacts, their creators and the magical aether which powers them. Plot The block focuses on a Steampunk aesthetic, with the steam replaced by the powerful material aether. The Gatewatch go to Chandra Nalaar's home world, the titular plane of Kaladesh, where she finds her mother (presumed dead) and almost kills Tezzeret. Tezzeret later kidnaps Rashmi, winner of the famous Inventor's Fair, and begins a dastardly plot to control the ruling Consulate.
