Guido Sutermeister
Guido Sutermeister ( Intra, November 21, 1883 - Legnano, March 30, 1964) was an Italian engineer and archaeologist. Biography Originally from Intra, Sutermeister began to work in his early twenties in Legnano in the mechanical industry Franco Tosi. Passionate about archeology, he promoted archaeological research at Altomilanese. Together with Alda Levi Spinazzola (Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Lombardia), he recovered the Parabiago plate. His investigations have also revealed numerous tombs of the Golasecca culture. The recovery by Sutermeister of some urns in Canegrate in 1926, led to the discovery of a vast necropolis, whose study has identified a prehistoric civilization which was given the name of '' Cultura di Canegrate''. Intra, Italy
Intra is a ''frazione'' of the municipality of Verbania, in Piedmont, northern Italy, located in a small alluvial plain. It is important for its port on Lake Maggiore and attendant tourism. Legnano
Legnano (; or ''Lignàn'') is an Italian town and ''comune'' in the north-westernmost part of the Metropolitan City of Milan, Province of Milan, about from central Milan. With 60,259, it is the thirteenth-most populous township in Lombardy. Legnano is located in the Alto Milanese and is crossed by the Olona river. The history of Legnano and its municipal area has been traced back to the 1st millennium BC via archaeological evidence. Already in remote times, in fact, the hills that line the Olona proved to be habitable places. The town was established in 1261. Franco Tosi
Franco Tosi (21 April 1850 – 25 November 1898) was an Italian engineer, known for his contributions to the steam engine technology. A native of Villa Cortese, near Milan, he was the son of Eugenio Tosi (1815-1896), and moved to Legnano in 1876, to become the manager of ''Cantoni-Krumm & C.'', where he led the development of the famous 3 hp (1877) and 40–50 hp Ryder steam engines (1881), the year which the company changed name to its current, Franco Tosi Meccanica. It employed six hundred people in the mid-1890s. Franco Tosi was killed by one of his employees in 1898. The company persisted. Other milestones were the first 6,000 kW engine (1904) and becoming the first Italian diesel engine maker (1907). Tosi also cooperated with Emilio Bozzi on his motorcycle development, and supervised building of the first submarine diving at 75 meters (1920). Alda Levi Spinazzola
Alda Levi Spinazzola (Bologna, 16 June 1890 – Rome, 23 June 1950) was an Italian archaeologist and art historian. Biography Levi was born within a Jewish middle-class family and attended the Liceo classico Tito Livio in Padua. In 1913 she graduated in Classical Philology and Learning sciences at Padua University. In 1915 she started her career as an inspector at the ''Soprintendenza Archeologica di Napoli'', and soon after met her future husband and opponent of Fascism, . The two were married only in 1932. Levi moved to Bologna (1924) and then Milan (1925) and she was appointed as director of the ''Ufficio distaccato della Soprintendenza alle antichità'' of Turin first, and Padua thereafter. She was the only inspector of archaeology for the whole Lombardy region during the years of the building boom. Parabiago Plate
The Parabiago plate, also known as the Parabiago patera, is an ancient Roman circular silver plate depicting mythological figures. It was found in an ancient Roman cemetery at Parabiago, near Milan, in 1907. The plate depicts Cybele with her consort Attis in a "vast cosmic setting" amid "sun, moon, earth and sea, time and the seasons." At the time of its discovery, it was thought to have been used as a lid for a funerary amphora. The plate is difficult to date. Earlier scholars tended to date it to the 2nd century CE, because of its classicizing style, but stylistic characteristics also permit a later date. Technical analyses, however, support a provenance in the 4th–5th centuries, even though it bears little stylistic resemblance to other silver pieces from that period. Golasecca Culture
The Golasecca culture (9th - 4th century BC) was a Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age culture in northern Italy, whose type-site was excavated at Golasecca in the province of Varese, Lombardy, where, in the area of Monsorino at the beginning of the 19th century, Abbot Giovanni Battista Giani made the first findings of about fifty graves with pottery and metal objects.
