Guest River
The Guest River is a short tributary of the Clinch River in Southwest Virginia, southwestern Virginia in the United States. It is part of the drainage basin, watershed of the Mississippi River by way of the Clinch, Tennessee River, Tennessee and Ohio River, Ohio Rivers. According to the Geographic Names Information System, the river has also been known historically as the Guests River. Course The Guest River flows for nearly its entire length in Wise County, Virginia, Wise County. It rises in the north-central part of the county and flows initially south-southeastwardly to the city of Norton, Virginia, Norton; then eastwardly to the town of Coeburn, Virginia, Coeburn; then southeastwardly for the remainder of its course. It flows into the Clinch on the common boundary of Wise and Scott County, Virginia, Scott Counties. Portions of the river flow through the Jefferson National Forest. Norton, Virginia
Norton is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, located in the far western tip of the state in Wise County, Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,687, making it the least populous city in Virginia. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Norton with surrounding Wise County for statistical purposes. History The settlement was originally known as "Prince's Flats," but in a bid to convince the Louisville and Nashville Railroad to build a depot there, the town was renamed after the then-current head of the railroad, Eckstein Norton. Norton was located on the Wilderness Trail, which had been blazed by Daniel Boone, and later extensively mapped and settled by Christopher Gist. Interstate Railroad
The Interstate Railroad was a railroad in the southwest part of the U.S. state of Virginia. It extended from the Clinchfield Railroad at Miller Yard in northeastern Scott County north and west to Appalachia and north to the main yard at Andover, with many branches to the north into the mountains. The company still exists as an operating subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, but is operated as if it were a Norfolk Southern Railway line. Route description The Interstate Railroad generally followed the valleys of the Guest River and Powell River, with only one summit, at Norton, between those two rivers. The railroad began at the Clinchfield Railroad's Miller Yard, along the Clinch River between Dungannon and Carfax. The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests is an administrative entity combining two U.S. National Forests into one of the largest areas of public land in the Eastern United States. Scott County is a county located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,576. Its county seat is Gate City. Scott County was formed by an act of the General Assembly on November 24, 1814, from parts of Washington, Lee, and Russell Counties and was named for Virginia born General Winfield Scott. Coeburn, Virginia
Coeburn is a town in Wise County, Virginia, United States, along the Guest River. The population was 2,139 at the 2010 census. History The Town of Coeburn was originally named Guest Station after explorer and surveyor Christopher Gist. Gist writes about the area of Coeburn in his trip journals of making camp in the area with his son, Tom. Incorporated in 1894, the Town changed its name from Guest Station to Coeburn after W. W. Coe, Chief Engineer of the N&W Railroad, and Judge W. E. Burns. The Tacoma School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Wise County, Virginia
Wise County is a county located in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county was formed in 1856 from Lee, Scott, and Russell Counties and named for Henry A. Wise, who was the Governor of Virginia at the time. History The Cherokee conquered the area including Wise from the Xualae between 1671 and 1685. It was later contested by the Six Nations and the Shawnee. Cherokee and Shawnee hunting parties fought a protracted battle at the headwaters of the Clinch River for two days in the summer of 1786, a victory for the Cherokee although losses were heavy on both sides. The first white explorers to reach present-day Wise county are said to have been Thomas Walker and Christopher Gist, both in 1750.
