Guerreros De Oaxaca
The Guerreros de Oaxaca (English: Oaxaca Warriors) are a professional baseball team in the Mexican League based in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, Mexico. Their home field is Estadio Eduardo Vasconcelos. History In October 1995, a group of businessmen, led by Alfredo Harp Helú, learned that the Charros de Jalisco were unable to continue participating in the league. These businessmen saw the opportunity to move the team from Guadalajara to the city of Oaxaca, and the project was officially presented at a meeting of directors of the Mexican League. The franchise move was officially accepted in December of that year and the new Guerreros, as they were named, played their first game on 14 March 1996, under the direction of manager Alfredo 'Lefty' Ortiz. The team recruited Mexican batter Nelson Barrera for its inaugural season. The Guerreros were the first ever professional sports team based in Oaxaca City. Liga Mexicana De Béisbol
The Mexican League (, ) is a professional baseball league based in Mexico and the oldest running professional league in the country. The league has 18 teams organized in two divisions, North and South. Teams play 114 games each season. Five teams in each division advance to a four-round postseason tournament that culminates in the Serie del Rey, a best-of-seven championship series between the two division champions. The Mexican League has two affiliated minor leagues, the Liga Norte de México and Mexican Academy League. Nelson Barrera
Nelson Barrera Romellón (17 October 1957 in Ciudad del Carmen – 14 July 2002 in Campeche City) was a Mexican professional baseball player, who at the time of his death led the Mexican League in career home runs (455) and RBIs (1,927). He was nicknamed ''El Almirante'' (The Admiral). Early life Barrera was born in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche on 17 October 1957. Career A right-hander hitter and a native of the Mexican state of Campeche, Barrera entered the Mexican League in 1977 with the Diablos Rojos del México after playing three years in the Mexican Central League. He hit only .235 as a rookie, with two home runs, but he continued to improve. He broke 20 home runs, hitting .354 with 101 RBI in 1984. Oscar Gregorio Azócar (February 21, 1965 – June 14, 2010) was a Venezuelan left fielder in Major League Baseball who played for the New York Yankees (1990) and San Diego Padres (1991-'92). Listed at 6' 1", 170 lb., Azócar batted and threw left-handed. In 202 career games, Azócar recorded a batting average of .226 and accumulated 10 stolen bases, and 36 runs batted in (RBI). Career Azócar was born in Soro, Sucre, Venezuela. After attending high school in Venezuela, he was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent on November 22, 1983. The Acereros de Monclova (English: Monclova Steelers) are a professional baseball team in the Mexican League based in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico.
