The Guavio Formation ( es, Calizas del Guavio, Kicg) is a geological formation of the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, Eastern Ranges of the Colombian Andes. The formation consists of conglomerates, shales and limestones, dates to the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous periods; Tithonian to Berriasian epochs and has a maximum thickness of . Etymology The formation was defined and named in 1976 by Rodríguez and Ulloa after the Guavio River, Cundinamarca.Acosta & Ulloa, 2002, p.51 Description Lithologies The Guavio Formation has a maximum thickness of , and is characterised by a sequence of conglomerates, shales and limestones. A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics ( lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). The Ocetá Páramo (Spanish: ''Páramo de Ocetá'') is a páramo, which means an ecosystem above the continuous forest line yet below the permanent snowline. Gachalá is a municipality and town of Colombia in the Guavio Province, part of the department of Cundinamarca. Type locality, also called type area, is the locality where a particular rock type, stratigraphic unit or mineral species is first identified. Depositional Environment
In geology, depositional environment or sedimentary environment describes the combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes associated with the deposition of a particular type of sediment and, therefore, the rock types that will be formed after lithification, if the sediment is preserved in the rock record. Conglomerate () is a clastic sedimentary rock that is composed of a substantial fraction of rounded to subangular gravel-size clasts. A conglomerate typically contains a matrix of finer-grained sediments, such as sand, silt, or clay, which fills the interstices between the clasts.
