Guasopa
Guasopa is a village on Woodlark Island, Milne Bay Province Papua New Guinea. It is served by Guasopa Airport. Its population during the 1990 census was 170, though it has since grown extensively. Guasopa is the location of the Guasopa Health Center; this health center serves as the regional health care center, and has a team of nine health workers who service the population of around 6,000 people on Woodlark Island. This team also provide support for the other aid posts on the island and carry out patrols to surrounding islands. There is one school in Guasopa (the Gusaopa Community School), though most students in the area go to Kulumadau Primary School. Naval Base Woodlark Island
Naval Base Woodlark Island was a United States Navy base built during World War II on Woodlark Island on Papua New Guinea. The US Navy built a PT boat base, boat repair depot, and harbor facilities at the city of Guasopa to support the Pacific War in 1943. The Harbor facilities was also built to support the US Navy in building the Narewa Airfield on the island. The base was part of the New Guinea campaign. History On June 21, 1943, American forces came ashore on southern New Georgia, and then on June 30, landed on Woodlark Island as part of Operation Chronicle. Guasopa Bay lacked a usable dock so the landing were done with LST landing ships. Landing with the United States Army and United States Marine Corps at Guasopa was the US Navy's Seabee 60th Construction Battalion, and the 20th Construction. Woodlark Island
Woodlark Island, known to its inhabitants simply as Woodlark or Muyua, is the main island of the Woodlark Islands archipelago, located in Milne Bay Province and the Solomon Sea, Papua New Guinea. Although no formal census has been conducted since 1990, the current population is estimated at approximately 6000 people (see section below on Population Issues). There is one primary school on the island (in Kulumadau) that teaches about 200 students (60 students are from outer islands); to attend highschool/secondary school, and all children must travel to Alotau on the mainland. Guasopa Airport
Guasopa Airport , is an airport at Guasopa on Woodlark Island, in the Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. History World War II U.S. forces captured Woodlark Island on 30 June 1943 as part of Operation Chronicle. The 60th US Naval Construction Battalion began construction on 2 July of a coralsurfaced runway which was ready for use by 14 July. The runway was later expanded and by September measured and by October 12 a parallel runway was also built, together with 110 hardstands. The airfield was also known as Woodlark Airfield. The airfield was used as a stopover point and refuelling point. Kulumadau
Kulumadau is a large, rural non-village (as per the official 1990 Woodlark Island census) on Woodlark Island, Milne Bay Province Papua New Guinea. It is served by Guasopa Airport. Its population during the 1990 census was 242, though it has since grown extensively; its current population is reported to be about 2,500 people, but there are no official sources for this number, as the last official census was taken in 1990 (this is the case in many rural islands of Milne Bay). There is a large primary school in Kulumadau (Kulumadau Primary School), where 200 students are taught (60 coming from outer islands). Students must travel to Alotau on the mainland to attend secondary school. Kulumadau (along with Guasopa) was built in the post-colonial times, and as such, is not considered a traditional village of Woodlark, however, since its inception, Kulumadau has been the primary population center on Woodlark Island. Milne Bay Province
Milne Bay is a province of Papua New Guinea. Its capital is Alotau. The province covers 14,345 km² of land and 252,990 km² of sea, within the province there are more than 600 islands, about 160 of which are inhabited. The province has about 276,000 inhabitants, speaking about 48 languages, most of which belong to the Eastern Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family. Alotau
Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province, in the south-east of Papua New Guinea. It is located on the northern shore of Milne Bay. The town is located within Alotau Urban LLG. Alotau is also the annual forum for Australian and Papua New Guinean ministers. Its Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alotau–Sideia. The town is located within the area in which the invading Japanese army suffered their first land defeat in the Pacific War in 1942, before the Kokoda Track battle. A memorial park at the old battle site commemorates the event. Alotau became the provincial capital in 1969, when it was shifted from Samarai.
