Guardian Rock
Guardian Rock is a low ice-free rock lying in Bigourdan Fjord, north of Parvenu Point, Pourquoi Pas Island, close off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was first surveyed in 1948–49 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and so named by them because of the position of this rock which guards the northwest entrance to The Narrows. Bigourdan Fjord
Bigourdan Fjord is a sound, long in an east-west direction and averaging wide, lying between Pourquoi Pas Island and the southwest part of Arrowsmith Peninsula, along the west coast of Graham Land in Antarctica. It was discovered by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and named by him for Guillaume Bigourdan, a noted French astronomer. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1934–37, under John Riddoch Rymill, and resurveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50. Pourquoi Pas Island is a mountainous island, long and from wide, lying between Bigourdan Fjord and Bourgeois Fjord off the west coast of Graham Land. Antarctic Peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula, known as O'Higgins Land in Chile and Tierra de San Martín in Argentina, and originally as Graham Land in the United Kingdom and the Palmer Peninsula in the United States, is the northernmost part of mainland Antarctica. The Antarctic Peninsula is part of the larger peninsula of West Antarctica, protruding from a line between Cape Adams (Weddell Sea) and a point on the mainland south of the Eklund Islands. Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is the United Kingdom's national polar research institute. It has a dual purpose, to conduct polar science, enabling better understanding of global issues, and to provide an active presence in the Antarctic on behalf of the UK.
