Groom is a town in Carson County, Texas, United States. The population was 574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is on Interstate Highway 40 (Historic Route 66) east of Amarillo and west of Oklahoma City. Geography Groom is located in the southeastern corner of Carson County at (35.203112, –101.106710). Interstate 40 bypasses the town to the north, with access from Exits 110 through 114. Historic Route 66 ( Business Route 40) passes through the center of town. Six-man football is a variant of gridiron football played with six players per team, instead of the standard 11 or 12. It is generally played by high schools in rural areas of the United States and Canada. History Six-man football was developed in 1934 by Stephen Epler in Chester, Nebraska, as an alternative means for small high schools to field a football team during the Great Depression. The first game was played on Thursday, September 27, 1934, at the Hebron, Nebraska Athletic Gridiron, under the lights, with a crowd of almost 1000 watching. This game was played so that coaches all over Kansas and Nebraska could see if they wanted to try this new game of six-man. Gray County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 21,227. The county seat is Pampa. The county was created in 1876 and later organized in 1902. is named for Peter W. Gray, a Confederate lawyer and soldier in the American Civil War. Armstrong County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in the Texas Panhandle and its county seat is Claude. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,848. Armstrong County is included in the Amarillo metropolitan area. The county was formed in 1876 and later organized in 1890. It was named for one of several Texas pioneer families named Armstrong.
