Grong Grong (band)
Grong Grong were a punk rock band from Adelaide. They formed in 1982 with Michael Farkas on vocals, synthesiser and saxophone, his half-brother Charlie Tolnay on guitar, George Klestinis on drums, and Dave Taskas on bass guitar. They disbanded in late 1984 after Farkas had overdosed and lapsed into a drug-induced coma for nine months. He recovered and worked in other bands including Hack. Grong Grong reformed in 2009 with Farkas, Klestinis and Tolnay joined by Nathan Dale on bass guitar; but disbanded again in 2013. They issued a self-titled album in 1984 and a live album, ''Live at the Sound Lounge'', in 2014. Pere Ubu
Pere Ubu is an American rock group formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975. The band had a variety of long-term and recurring band members, with singer David Thomas being the only member staying throughout the band's lifetime. They released their debut album ''The Modern Dance'' in 1978 and followed with several more LPs before disbanding in 1982. Thomas reformed the group in 1987, continuing to record and tour. Describing their sound as "avant-garage," Pere Ubu's work drew inspiration from sources such as musique concrète, 60s rock, performance art, and the industrial environments of the American Midwest. ''Spin'' compared the band favorably to The Birthday Party, saying "Grong's sound screeches and shimmers smoothly in vibrato-drowned squiggles" and that the songs "only hint at the dark, heavy, and twisted minds behind this flat black slab." Pennington, South Australia
Pennington is a northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located about 10 km from the Adelaide city centre. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. The suburb is residential, apart from a light industrial pocket to the south. History The area now including Pennington was subdivided in 1909 by Captain Alfred Hodgeman, who named a section after his wife, the former Helen Pennington. The Pennington Post Office opened on 1 May 1939 and closed in 1997. Pennington was the site of a Migrant hostels of South Australia#Pennington Hostel, migrant hostel from 1950 until it closed in 1985. It was known as Finsbury Hostel from 1949 to 1966, then renamed to Pennington. It initially consisted of Nissen huts, Romney huts and Quonset huts, mostly second hand Army surplus. Ian McFarlane
Ian McFarlane (born 1959) is an Australian music journalist, music historian and author, whose best known publication is the '' Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop'' (1999), which was updated for a second edition in 2017. As a journalist he started in 1984 with '' Juke'', a rock music newspaper. During the early 1990s he worked for Roadrunner Records while he published a music guide, ''The Australian New Music Record Guide Volume 1: 1976–1980'' (1992). He followed with two fanzines, ''Freedom Train'' and ''Prehistoric Sounds'', both issued during 1994 to 1996. McFarlane's ''The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop'' is described by the ''Australian Music Guide'' as "the most exhaustive and wide-ranging encyclopedia of Australian music from the 1950s onwards". The Crystal Ballroom (also known as The Ballroom and Seaview Ballroom) was a music venue located within the Seaview Hotel on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It has often been referred to as the centerpiece of Melbourne's post-punk movement, showcasing groups such as The Birthday Party, Dead Can Dance and Crime and the City Solution, as well as being a mainstay of the Little Band scene.
