Grocka
Grocka ( sr-cyr, Гроцка, ) or Grocka na Dunavu ( sr-cyr, Гроцка на Дунаву, ) is a municipality of the city of Belgrade. According to the 2011 census results, the municipality has 83,906 inhabitants. Location and geography The municipality is located east of Belgrade, in the northern part of Šumadija region, with the northern section being part of the Podunavlje macro-region in the valley of the Danube, while the southern section is located around the valley of the Ralja River, which is a tributary to the Velika Morava's arm of Jezava. With an altitude of 71 meters above sea level, the town of Grocka is one of the lowest parts of Belgrade. Other rivers in the municipality are Bolečica and Gročica ( sr-cyr, Грочица). Being polluted, in March 2019 the environmentalists described both rivers as "less of a watercourses, more of a sewage watersheds". Subdivisions Of Belgrade
Serbia's capital city of Belgrade is divided into 17 municipalities. Most of the municipalities are situated on the southern side of the Danube and Sava rivers, in the Šumadija region. Begaljica
Begaljica ( sr-cyr, Бегаљица ()) is a rural settlement in the Grocka municipality of eastern Belgrade, Serbia. It is one of 15 settlements of Grocka, situated in its centre, with a population of 8,233 according to the 2011 preliminary census. The village is located at the water source of the Begaljica river, a tributary of the Danube, thus in the southern half of Podunavlje, as well as in the fertile Šumadija region of central Serbia. Begaljica was first mentioned in 1528, seven years after the Ottoman conquest of Serbia, as having 5 families, and the Rajinovac monastery on the hill above the village. As the region was located on the Ottoman-Habsburg war frontier, villages were constantly destroyed and deserted. In fact, the village of Begaljica (literally "fleeing town") derived its name from these events. Brestovik
Brestovik ( Serbian Cyrillic: Брестовик) is a suburban settlement of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Grocka. Location Brestovik is located in the eastern part of the municipality, on the border of the municipality of Grocka (and the City of Belgrade) and municipality of Smederevo (and the Podunavlje District). It is 6 km east of the municipal seat of Grocka and almost 40 km east of Belgrade. It is located on the southern bank of the Danube. Vrčin
Vrčin ( Serbian Cyrillic: Врчин) is a suburban settlement of Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in Belgrade's municipality of Grocka. Name Though the village itself was mentioned much later, historians Dušan J. Popović and Vladimir Ćorović traced the name of the locality back to the Roman period and the nearby temple of rcinium. It was dedicated to the Etruscan-Roman goddess of destiny, Nortia. After Slavic settlement, Roman names ending with ''-cin um' were mostly contracted to ''čin'', while suffix ''-dunum'' was morphed into ''din''. rcinium was thus shortened to rčin and then modified to Vrčin. Vinča
Vinča ( sr-cyr, Винча, ) is a suburban settlement of Belgrade, Serbia. It is part of the municipality of Grocka. Vinča-Belo Brdo, an important archaeological site that gives its name to the Neolithic Vinča culture, is located in the village. Zaklopača ( Serbian Cyrillic: Заклопача) is a suburban settlement of Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in Belgrade's municipality of Grocka. Location Zaklopača is located in the central part of the municipality, 8 km west of the municipal seat of Grocka and 25 km east of Belgrade. It is located on the road connecting the road of ''Smederevski put'' to the north and the highway Belgrade-Niš to the south, with another branch of the road connecting Zaklopača directly to Grocka to the east. Name Name of the village is unusual, but the origin of it is obscured. One of the explanations is that it is because the village is closed or covered by the surrounding hills (in Serbian: ''zaklopiti'') while the other is that a certain Turkish pasha was slaughtered (Serbian: zaklati) in the area. Kaluđerica
Kaluđerica ( sr-Cyrl, Калуђерица, ) is an urban neighborhood of Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Grocka. Location Kaluđerica is the westernmost settlement in the municipality of Grocka. Umčari ( Serbian Cyrillic: Умчари) is a suburban settlement of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It is located in Belgrade's municipality of Grocka. Umčari is located in the southeastern part of the municipality, in the northern Šumadija region. Leštane ( sr-cyr, Лештане) is a suburban settlement of Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Grocka. Location Leštane is located 15 km east of Belgrade, originally further away from the major roads.
