Grimaud, Var
Grimaud () is a village and commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It is located on the French Riviera. The village of Grimaud is a perched village, with historical links to the Grimaldi family. Gibelin de Grimaldi aided William the Good in driving the Saracens of Fraxinet out of the area in AD 973 and was rewarded with the land. The village is dominated by its 11th-century castle (partially restored). The Gulf of Saint Tropez was known as the Gulf of Grimaud until the end of the 19th century. The seaside town of Port Grimaud lies within the commune, at the head of the gulf. Grimaud is a brand of playing cards published by France Cartes Cartamundi, a manufacturer of playing cards and board games based in Lorraine. History In 1840, Baptiste-Paul Grimaud, a 23-year-old man from Brûlain near Niort, moved to Paris.. In 1851, he joined forces with two merchants, Eugène Martineau and Marcel Bourru, who finally sold him their cardmaking operation. A few years later, the company implemented a process to obtain metallic, rounded-corner cards, an innovation which was very successful. Industrializing the card manufacturing process and buying out or outdoing its competitors ( Camoin in 1885, Lequart and Mignot in 1891, Bony, Dieudonné and Fossorier and Amar in 1910), Grimaud gradually became the biggest French cardmakers. It was at the 1900 Paris Exposition that Grimaud marked its high point when the company was awarded numerous prizes. Hélène Grimaud
Hélène Rose Paule Grimaud (born 7 November 1969) is a French classical pianist and the founder of the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York. Early life and education Grimaud was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. She described family nationalities in a ''New York Times'' interview with John Rockwell: "My father came from a background of Sephardi Jews in Africa, and my mother's ancestors were Jewish Berbers from Corsica." Her father was adopted as a child by a French family and he became a university tutor teaching languages. According to Luc Antonini the name Grimaud is typical of the region of Trets in Provence. She discovered the piano at seven. In 1982, she entered the Conservatoire de Paris, where she studied with Jacques Rouvier. In 1985, she won 1st Prize at the Conservatory and the Grand Prix du Disque of the Académie Charles Cros for her recording of the Rachmaninoff '' Piano Sonata No. 2.''
