Grenada At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Grenada competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's eighth consecutive appearance at the Olympics. Few weeks before the Games, Grenadian athletes trained at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre near Horsham, West Sussex. Grenada Olympic Committee sent the nation's largest delegation to the Games, with a total of 10 athletes (6 men and 4 women), competing in 4 different sports. Taekwondo jin Andrea St. Bernard, who competed for the nation's Olympic debut in her sport, was the oldest athlete of the team, at age 32. Track runner and world junior champion Kirani James, the youngest athlete at age 19, was Grenada's flag bearer at the opening ceremony, and subsequently, became the nation's first Olympic medalist when he took the gold medal in the Men's 400 metres. The times in the three semi-finals were very close, but while Allyson Felix appeared to put a minimum of effort to hold off Murielle Ahouré in heat two, in heat one Veronica Campbell-Brown dipped at the finish to edge Carmelita Jeter and in heat three Sanya Richards-Ross raced Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to the line. Semoy Hackett set the Trinidad and Tobago national record as the first time qualifier, Myriam Soumaré only one hundredth behind as the other time qualifier in 22.56. Paige Arielle "McFierce" McPherson (born October 1, 1990, in Abilene, Texas) is an Olympic taekwondo competitor from the United States. Biography Early life and education McPherson grew up in Sturgis, South Dakota. She and four other siblings were adopted by Susan and Dave McPherson. Her biological family includes an older brother and two half-siblings. She is of African American and Filipino descent. She graduated from Black Hills Classical Christian Academy in 2009 and then went on to attend Miami-Dade College. Career McPherson was a silver medalist at the 2011 Pan Am Games. She represented the USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the women’s 67 kg taekwondo event and in the preliminary round secured a surprise defeat over Team GB's Sarah Stevenson. Nur Tatar Askari (born August 16, 1992 in Van, Turkey) is a world and European champion Turkish female taekwondo practitioner competing in the feather, light and welterweight divisions. She is of Kurdish descent. She was a member of the TSE Sports Club in Ankara before she transferred to Ankara İller Bankası. She is coached by Cüneyt Gülçek. Nur Tatar won her first medal at the age of 15. She won twice the European Junior Taekwondo Championships, and reached to gold medals in A-class tournaments in Europe. Taekwondo At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 67 Kg
The women's 67 kg competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics was held on 10 August, at the ExCeL Exhibition Centre. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. Two bronze medals were awarded at the Taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Every competitor who lost to one of the two finalists competed in the repechage, another single-elimination competition. Each semifinal loser faced the last remaining repechage competitor from the opposite half of the bracket in a bronze medal match. Esau Walter Simpson (born 6 October 1990) is a Grenadian swimmer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the Men's 100 metre freestyle, finishing in 43rd place overall in the heats, failing to qualify for the semifinals. Kurt Felix (athlete)
Kurt Felix (born 4 July 1988) is a Grenadian athlete who competes in the decathlon. He was the NCAA 2012 Division I Decathlon Champion and was named the Mountain West Men's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. On 24–25 July 2017, Kurt participated in the 21st Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-meeting which was part of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge. He placed second at the meet with a score of 8509 points and set a meeting record in the Javelin Throw with a distance of 72.80m. On 5 January 2018 at the National Sports Awards, Kurt received the Presidential Award of Merrit for 2017 from the Grenada Olympic Committee.
