Gregg Deal
Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute) is an artist and activist whose work deals with "Indigenous identity and pop culture, touching on issues of race relations, historical consideration and stereotype" Biography Gregg Deal was born in Park City, Utah, to a white father and Native American mother. Deal is an enrolled as a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Deal met his wife, Megan Prymak in Provo, Utah in 1998. The following year, they moved to Montclair, Virginia and married. Deal enrolled as a student at George Mason University in 1999, studying art with a concentration in painting. He and his family lived in the Washington, D.C., area for 17 years before moving to their current place of residence, Colorado Springs, CO. He resides there with his wife and five children. Pyramid Lake Paiute
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation is a United States reservation in northwestern Nevada, approximately northeast of Reno, in Washoe, Storey, and Lyon counties. It is governed by the federally recognized Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, which represents two Northern Paiute bands, the larger Kuyuidökadö (Cui Yui Ticutta) ("Cui-ui-Fish-Eaters") and the smaller Tasiget tuviwarai ("Those who live amidst the mountains"). The reservation lies almost entirely in Washoe County (99.88%), with small amounts of land in the other two counties (at the southern end, near the city of Fernley). In 1993, the population of the reservation was 1,603 individuals. At that time there were 2,253 enrolled members of the tribe. The 2000 census reported a population of 1,734 on the reservation. Nanibah Chacon
Nanibah "Nani" Chacon (born 1980) is a Diné and Chicana painter, muralist, and art educator. Her work has been installed at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, the ISEA International Arts and Technology Symposium, Old Town Lansing, and in the "Que Chola" Exhibition at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, among other venues. Early life Chacon was born in Gallup, New Mexico and raised in Chinle, Arizona and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Art practice At the age of 15, Chacon first became involved in street art and graffiti. For decades, hundreds of organizations and individuals advocated that the American football team formerly known as the Washington Redskins should change its name and logo. In July 2020, following a wave of racial awareness and reforms in wake of national protests after the murder of George Floyd, major sponsors of the league and team threatened to stop supporting them until the name was changed. As a result, the team initiated a review of the name and decided to retire it and the logo, temporarily playing as the Washington Football Team pending adoption of a permanent name.
