Greg Fairley
Greg Fairley is a former Group races, Group 1-winning Scottish jockey, who was British flat racing Champion Apprentice in 2007. He began riding on the low-level "flapping" circuit in the Scottish Borders, where his father Andrew had ridden more than 600 winners. From there, he joined the Mark Johnston (racehorse trainer), Mark Johnston stable in Middleham, Yorkshire in 2004, and his parents moved with him. He had been at school with Keith Dalgleish and it was he who helped him to settle in and establish himself. He became Champion Apprentice in 2007 with 65 winners, beating Liam Jones and William Buick in the process. In 2009, his yearly tally reached a personal high of 85 winners and the following year, he won his first Group 1 success on Lady Jane Digby in the Bayerisches Zuchtrennen the following year. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. William Buick
William Buick (born 22 July 1988) is a Norwegian-British flat jockey. He shared the champion apprentice jockey title in 2008 with David Probert and won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in 2007 and 2008. From 2010 to 2014 he was stable jockey to John Gosden. In 2015 he signed with Godolphin. Buick won his first Group1 race in Canada in 2010 and since then has won Group 1 races in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. He has won four British Classic Races: the St Leger in 2010, 2011 and 2021 and the Derby in 2018. Jimmy Quinn (jockey)
James Quinn (born 20 May 1967) is an Irish professional horse racing flat jockey. Quinn was born in Rochestown, New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland. He moved to England as an apprentice jockey in 1985 and works as a freelance jockey based in Newmarket. In four seasons (1996, 2002, 2004 and 2009) Quinn clocked up over 1,000 rides. In an interview with ''The Guardian'' in 2006, he defended the practice of riding in afternoon and evening race meetings on the same day, even if it meant driving long distances between meetings. He described his career in the following terms: "I know I'm not one of the really top jockeys. But I've built a really good career as a successful lightweight jockey. Kirsty Milczarek
Kirsty Milczarek is a professional jockey, riding in thoroughbred horse races. She is of Polish descent but was born in the UK, where she is based in Newmarket. Riding career Kirsty Milczarek became involved in horse racing after leaving a successful career in showjumping. British Horseracing Authority
The British Horseracing Authority, also known simply as the BHA, is the regulatory authority for horse racing in Great Britain. It was formed on 31 July 2007, after the merger of the British Horseracing Board (BHB) and the Horseracing Regulatory Authority (HRA). Bayerisches Zuchtrennen
The Bayerisches Zuchtrennen is a Group 1 flat horse race in Germany open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Munich over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year on the last Sunday in July. History The event was established in 1866, and it was originally restricted to three-year-olds. It was known as the Grosser Dreijährigen-Zuchtpreis from 1940 to 1944, and as the Bayerisches Derby in 1947. The present race grading system was introduced in Germany in 1972, and the Bayerisches Zuchtrennen was initially classed at Group 3 level. It was opened to older horses and promoted to Group 2 in 1985. It was given Group 1 status in 1990. Middleham, Yorkshire
Middleham is an English market town and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire. It lies in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales, on the south side of the valley, upstream from the junction of the River Ure and River Cover. There has been a settlement there since Roman times. Mark Johnston (racehorse Trainer)
Mark Johnston (born 10 October 1959) is a Scottish racehorse trainer based in Middleham, North Yorkshire, England. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the University of Glasgow and is a qualified vet. He started training at a stable near Louth, Lincolnshire in 1987, and his first winner was Hinari Video at Carlisle He has been training in Middleham since 1988 when he purchased Kingsley House (often falsely attributed to be the former home of Charles Kingsley, author of '' The Water Babies''). In 2004 he won the 1,000 Guineas with Attraction. Other successful horses he has trained are Mister Baileys, winner of the 2,000 Guineas, Shamardal, 2004 European Champion Two-Year-Old, and Double Trigger, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup.
