Greenwood State Beach (Elk)
Greenwood State Beach, also known as Elk Beach, is a state-protected beach of California, United States. It is located in the unincorporated village of Elk in Mendocino County. It is located about north of Point Arena on Highway 1. The park was established in 1978. History The beach is located in Elk, a lumber town through the 19th century and early twentieth century. It was originally used by the L.E. White Lumber Company, which operated from 1884–1916. The Goodyear Redwood Lumber Company then purchased the land from 1916–1930. The old mill office of the lumber company is now a visitor center for the state beach. The beach is named after Britton Bailey Greenwood, son of famed mountain man Caleb Greenwood. In 1995 the beach was renamed from Greenwood Creek State Beach to Greenwood State Beach. Elk (formerly Greenwood and Elk River) is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California. It is located south of Fort Bragg, at an elevation of 135 feet (41 m). Elk has a population of 208. It is located on the coast at the crossroads of State Route 1 and Philo-Greenwood Road. Albion, Little River, and Mendocino lie to the north, and Manchester and Point Arena to the south. Inland are Navarro, Philo, and Boonville. History Elk was originally called "Greenwood," after the Greenwood brothers, early homesteaders and sons of mountain man Caleb Greenwood and his half-Crow wife, one of the rescuers of the Donner Party. Point Arena, formerly known as Punta Arena (Spanish for "Sandy Point") is a small coastal city in Mendocino County, California, United States. Point Arena is located west of Hopland, at an elevation of . The population was 460 at the 2020 census, making it one of the smallest incorporated cities in the state. Its main street is part of State Route 1, California's coastal artery. State Route 1 (SR 1) is a major north–south state highway that runs along most of the Pacific coastline of the U.S. state of California. Caleb Greenwood
Caleb Greenwood (c. 1763 – c. 1850) was a Western U.S. fur trapper and trail guide. Early years Born in Virginia, Greenwood took part in trapping expeditions organized by associates of John Jacob Astor in 1810 and by Manuel Lisa in 1812–1813. In 1815 he trapped independently on the Arkansas River, and later traveled up the Missouri River in the company of other trappers. In 1824 trappers led by John Henry Weber, including Greenwood and Jim Bridger, crossed South Pass to trap on the eastern slope of the Wind River Mountains. Weber's party went to what is today Soda Springs, Idaho, and proceeded to a tributary of the Bear River to establish a winter camp. On May 23, 1825, Weber's party joined with a group led by Jedediah Smith in a confrontation with Hudson's Bay Company trappers led by Peter Skene Ogden. A beach is a landform alongside a body of water which consists of loose particles. The particles composing a beach are typically made from rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, etc., or biological sources, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae.
