Greenwood Cemetery (Orlando, Florida)
Greenwood Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Orlando, Florida. History In 1880, eight Orlando residents pulled together to buy 26 acres of land and form Orlando Cemetery. The name was changed to Greenwood Cemetery in 1915 at the request of two of its founders. The cemetery has expanded with land purchases over time and now has 86 acres of land. Sections of the cemetery are dedicated to Confederate veterans, Union veterans, Spanish-American veterans, World War I veterans and World War II veterans. Moonlight walking tours of the cemetery are popular in Orlando. These tours are led by a sexton and it offers a window into Orlando's history. The west side of the cemetery contains the 19-acre park, Greenwood Urban Wetlands, which was established in 1991. A section of the cemetery contains unmarked plots for the victims of lynchings by whites, according to history professor Vibert White. Connie Leigh Kunkle (April 4, 1958 – December 14, 2016) was an American television personality and singer who was best known as a host on the shopping network ShopHQ (formerly ShopNBC and Evine Live). Early life Connie grew up in Indiana, Pennsylvania, to parents Ruth Miller Kunkle and Thomas L. Kunkle. She started developing her musical talent in public schools and performed in the school musicals, choirs, and orchestra. After graduating from Ohio University with a BS in communications, Kunkle's first job was at Walt Disney World as one of the Kids of the Kingdom. Walter Duranty (25 May 1884 – 3 October 1957) was an Anglo-American journalist who served as Moscow bureau chief of ''The New York Times'' for fourteen years (1922–1936) following the Bolshevik victory in the Russian Civil War (1918–1921). In 1932, Duranty received a Pulitzer Prize for a series of reports about the Soviet Union, eleven of which were published in June 1931. He was later criticized for his subsequent denial of the widespread famine (1930–1933) in the USSR, most particularly the Holodomor. Joseph Bert Tinker (July 27, 1880 – July 27, 1948) was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played from 1902 through 1916 for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Chicago Whales of the Federal League. Born in Muscotah, Kansas, Tinker began playing semi-professional baseball in Kansas in the late 19th century. He began his professional career in 1900 in minor league baseball and made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 1902. Tinker was a member of the Chicago Cubs dynasty that won four pennants and two World Series championships between 1906 and 1910. After playing one season with Cincinnati in 1913, he became one of the first stars to jump to the upstart Federal League in 1914. Carl Langford
Carl T. Langford (July 23, 1918 – July 9, 2011) was an American politician who was Mayor of Orlando, Florida, from 1967 to 1980. He served in the United States Army from 1941 until 1946 with the rank of Mayor. He was also one of the first two Eagle Scouts Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Scouts BSA program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Braxton Beacham
Braxton Beacham (September 12, 1864 - September 24, 1924) was the eighteenth Mayor of Orlando from 1906 to 1907. He was also an Orlando businessman and entrepreneur who owned the Beacham Movie Theatre and founded "Prosper Colony" which became Taft, Florida. He married Roberta Holland on June 16, 1887.
