Greenfield Railway Station
Greenfield railway station in the village of Greenfield, Greater Manchester, England, is on the Huddersfield Line northeast of Manchester Victoria. It is the final station in Greater Manchester before the West Yorkshire boundary. History The line through Greenfield was constructed by the Huddersfield and Manchester Railway, which was absorbed by the London and North Western Railway on 9 July 1847 before any of it was opened. The section between and was opened on 1 August 1849, and the station at Greenfield was opened the same day. On 1 September 1851, the branch to opened, which left the main line at Delph Junction, about a mile to the north of Greenfield; Greenfield was the last station before the junction until opened in 1912. A second branch, to Oldham, opened on 5 July 1856; it left the main line just to the south of Greenfield. Greenfield is a village in the civil parish of Saddleworth in the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. It is east of Oldham, and northeast of Manchester. It lies in a broad rural area at the southern edge of the South Pennines. To the east of the village Dovestone Reservoir, Chew Reservoir and Greenfield Reservoir lie in the Peak District National Park. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Greenfield is in the Chew Valley, on the main A635 road from Ashton-under-Lyne to Holmfirth. History A Roman road passes along the Saddleworth hills, from the fort of Ardotalia in Glossop to Castleshaw Roman fort. The route of the Roman road passes through Greenfield and crosses Chew Brook at Packhorse Bridge. Saddleworth
Saddleworth is a civil parish of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Greater Manchester, England. It comprises several villages and hamlets as well as suburbs of Oldham on the west side of the Pennine hills. Areas include Austerlands, Delph, Denshaw, Diggle, Dobcross, Friezland, Grasscroft, Greenfield, Grotton, Lydgate, Scouthead, Springhead and Uppermill. Chew Valley, Greater Manchester
Chew Valley in Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, England, follows the course of Chew Brook on the western slopes of Black Chew Head to where it joins the River Tame at Greenfield, east of Manchester. Part of the higher fringes of the valley towards the peak of Black Chew Head lie across the boundary in Derbyshire. The eastern part of the valley including the reservoirs of Dovestone and Chew are within the north western extremity of the Peak District National Park. Chew Reservoir was completed in 1912. At above sea level, it was the highest reservoir constructed in England. A tram-road was laid in Chew Valley to transport of clay to make an inner core for its dam to make it watertight. Chew Reservoir (Greater Manchester)
Chew Reservoir is a reservoir at the head of the Chew Valley in the Peak District National Park in Greater Manchester, England. The reservoir scheme in the Greenfield and Chew Valleys by the Ashton Stalybridge and Dukinfield Waterworks Joint Committee commenced in 1870. Chew Reservoir was built to hold 200 million gallons of water. Intended to be a compensation reservoir, it also had a filtration plant so that it could be used for drinking water in times of drought. Completed in 1912, the reservoir was the highest constructed in England, at above sea level, until the Cow Green Reservoir in the North Pennines in Teesside was completed in 1971. Dovestones Reservoir
Dovestone Reservoir lies at the convergence of the valleys of the Greenfield and Chew Brooks above the village of Greenfield, on Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester, England. The reservoir is on the western edge of the Peak District National Park. It supplies drinking water to the surrounding area and is a tourist attraction, providing several walks amongst picturesque landscapes. History John Platt of Oldham built a Neo-Gothic mansion at Ashway Gap on the south side of the valley in 1850. It was used as a shooting lodge but after his brother James's death in a shooting accident on the moor above it, the house was left empty. Manchester Victoria station in Manchester, England is a combined mainline railway station and Metrolink tram stop.
