Green Carnation
Green Carnation is a Norwegian progressive metal band from Kristiansand, formed in 1990. Green Carnation's trend of music has continuously changed on every release one by one; from straight forward death metal in their demo, to death-doom, then a progressive doom metal sound, to an atmospheric gothic metal sound, to a melancholic hard rock sound and in 2006, went as far as to releasing an entirely acoustic album '' Acoustic Verses''. The band released its first album in 14 years titled '' Leaves of Yesteryear'' on May 8, 2020, which marked a return to their earlier gothic progressive metal roots. A new single was composed, arranged, rehearsed and recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, called "The World Without a View", and released digitally on December 18th 2020. History Formation and early years (1990–2001) Green Carnation is the creation of former Emperor bass player Terje Vik Schei ( a.k.a. Tchort), founded before Tchort joined Emperor in 1990. It eventually split, with ...

Acoustic Verses
''Acoustic Verses'' is the fifth full-length studio album by the Norwegian progressive metal band Green Carnation. It was released on January 30, 2006 via Sublife Productions. The album features three songs included on their 2005 EP '' The Burden Is Mine... Alone'': "Sweet Leaf", "The Burden Is Mine... Alone", as well as the cover of Jon English's 1978 international hit "Six Ribbons" (only in the special edition). Reception The album was met with positive reviews Blabbermouth.net rated it with an 8 and describes it as "it's as lush, orchestrated, and enigmatic as any 'electric' album from this quizzical band". Laura Taylor of Exclaim! said "similar to Opeth’s ''Damnation'' in some respects, ''Acoustic Verses'' covers more ground, perhaps in part because of the number of songwriters involved, but the album’s stylistic experimentation is very much in line with the Green Carnation’s proven pattern". Background ''Acoustic Verses'' was yet another stylistic shift for Green ...

Acoustic Music
Acoustic music is music that solely or primarily uses instruments that produce sound through acoustic means, as opposed to electric or electronic means. While all music was once acoustic, the retronym "acoustic music" appeared after the advent of electric instruments, such as the electric guitar, electric violin, electric organ and synthesizer. Acoustic string instrumentations had long been a subset of popular music, particularly in folk. It stood in contrast to various other types of music in various eras, including big band music in the pre-rock era, and electric music in the rock era. Music reviewer Craig Conley suggests, "When music is labeled acoustic, unplugged, or unwired, the assumption seems to be that other types of music are ''cluttered'' by technology and overproduction and therefore aren't as ''pure''." Types of acoustic instruments Acoustic instruments can be split into six groups: string instruments, wind instruments, percussion, other instruments, ensemble i ...

Shining (Norwegian Band)
Shining (stylized as SHINING) is a Norwegian band from Oslo. Thirteen musicians have been a part of the band's lineup in its history, with singer, guitarist, saxophonist, and songwriter Jørgen Munkeby as its leading force and only constant member. The band is also called SHINING (NOR) to avoid confusion with the eponymous Swedish black metal band. Shining was created in 1999 as an acoustic instrumental jazz quartet consisting of Munkeby, drummer Torstein Lofthus, pianist Morten Qvenild, and double bassist Aslak Hartberg. They released their first albums ''Where the Ragged People Go'' and '' Sweet Shanghai Devil'' in 2001 and 2003 respectively. Their 2005 album ''In the Kingdom of Kitsch You Will Be a Monster'' led the band into a more avant-garde, electric, and rock-oriented sound, with Qvenild playing synthesizers and other electronic keyboards and Hartberg mostly using bass guitar instead of double bass. Qvenild and Hartberg both left the band before or following the releas ...

He has been involved in a series of metal bands, and is now associate professor in performing rhythmic piano at the University of Agder. Within his own studio ("Studio 3014") and own label (BAM Records), he made his debut as solo artist in 2011, with three album releases, ''Closure'' featuring recordings from the period 2006–10, together with Fredrik Sahlander (bass) and Trygve Tambs-Lychè (drums), except the uptempo avalanche "FXG", where Geir Åge Johnsen takes care of the drums. The two solo albums are from a more recent date, recorded in January (Vol.1) and May (Vol.2). The repertoire on both is dominated by relatively short improvisations, often lyrical, quiet and with very deliberate use of pauses. But both also show a pianist with technique, including sound therapy, which enables him to exploit the instru ...

Heavy Metal Music
Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock and acid rock, heavy metal bands developed a thick, monumental sound characterized by distortion (music), distorted guitars, extended guitar solos, emphatic Beat (music), beats and loudness. In 1968, three of the genre's most famous pioneers – Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple – were founded. Though they came to attract wide audiences, they were often derided by critics. Several American bands modified heavy metal into more accessible forms during the 1970s: the raw, sleazy sound and shock rock of Alice Cooper and Kiss (band), Kiss; the blues-rooted rock of Aerosmith; and the flashy guitar leads and party rock of Van Halen. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence,Walser (1993), p. 6 while Motörhea ...

Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness

Originally, it was released by German record label Prophecy Productions in November 2001. Background The album was composed, written and arranged by founding member Terje Vik Schei (a.k.a. Tchort). It is composed of a single 60-minute track and was largely inspired by the death of Tchort's daughter and dedicated to his son, Damien Aleksander, whose baby voice appears a few moments in the song. It is said that 600 different samples were used in the editing of the song. Musical style Musically, ''Light of Day, Day of Darkness'' is pure progressive metal. In this album, the band combines many different instruments, not commonly used in metal, to create an original soundscape. The album shows some death metal twinges from their roots with Roger Rasmussen / Nattefrost drafted in to perform death growls and Anders Kobro implementing occasional blast beat ...

Folk Metal
Folk metal is a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s. It is characterised by the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles (for example, Dutch Heidevolk, Danish Sylvatica and Spanish Stone of Erech). It also sometimes features soft instrumentation influenced by folk rock. The earliest folk metal bands were Skyclad from England and Cruachan from Ireland. Skyclad's debut album '' The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth'' was released in 1991 and would be considered a thrash metal album with some folk influences, unlike Cruachan’s early work which embraced the folk element as a defining part of their sound. It was not until 1994 and 1995 that other early contributors in the genre began to emerge from different regions of Europe and beyond. Among these early groups, the German band Subway to Sally spearheaded a different regional variation that over time became known as medie ...

Avant-garde metal (also known as avant-metal, experimental metal, and experimental) is a subgenre of heavy metal music loosely defined by use of experimentation and innovative, avant-garde elements, including non-standard and unconventional sounds, instruments, song structures, playing styles, and vocal techniques.
