Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Of Australia And New Zealand
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia and New Zealand was an archdiocese of the Church of Greece, Greek Orthodox Church in Australia and New Zealand, part of the Eastern Orthodox religion. It was a jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The archdiocese was split in 1970 to form the 'Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia' and the 'Metropolis of New Zealand' History In March 1924, the 'Metropolis of Australia and New Zealand' was established under the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The first Metropolitan bishop, Metropolitan of the new province of the Ecumenical Thronos was Christoforos Knitis of Serres, who presided from 1924-1928. He was succeeded by Metropolitan Timotheos Evangelinidis from 1931 to 1947, Metropolitan Theophylactos Papathanasopoulos from 1947 to 1958 and Metropolitan Ezekiel Tsoukalas from 1959. In church governance, a diocese or bishopric is the ecclesiastical district under the jurisdiction of a bishop. History In the later organization of the Roman Empire, the increasingly subdivided provinces were administratively associated in a larger unit, the diocese (Latin ''dioecesis'', from the Greek term διοίκησις, meaning "administration"). Christianity was given legal status in 313 with the Edict of Milan. Churches began to organize themselves into dioceses based on the civil dioceses, not on the larger regional imperial districts. Theophylactos Papathanasopoulos
Metropolitan Theophylactos (born Vasileios Papathanasopoulos; 1891–1958) was a Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Biography Papathanasopoulos was born on the feast of St. Basil on 1 January 1891 and was baptised Vasileios (Basil). He was born and raised at Pyrgos, Greece, son of Demetrios Papathanasopoulos and his wife Kaliopi. He studied theology at the Theological School of Halki and began his novitiate at the monastery of Stavronikita, Mount Athos, Greece. He made his vows as a monk on 2 December 1917 and took the name Theophylactos and then was ordained priest. After graduating from the theological faculty of University of Athens, he taught at the Rizareios Ecclesiastical School. Archbishop Makarios Griniezakis ( Greek: Μακάριος Γρινιεζάκης; born 15 March 1973) is the current archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church of Australia and the primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, succeeding Archbishop Stylianos of Australia. Studies and career Prior to serving in the Greek Orthodox Church, Archbishop Makarios completed his elementary studies in his birthplace and at the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School of Athens. Stylianos Harkianakis ( el, Στυλιανός Χαρκιανάκης; 29 December 1935 – 25 March 2019) was the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Australia and Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. He served as inaugural and permanent Chairman of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Churches in Australia and Dean of St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College. Ezekiel Tsoukalas
Archbishop Ezekiel Tsoukalas ( el, Ιεζεκιήλ Τσουκαλάς; 13 May 1913 – 1 July 1987) was a Greek bishop and the first Archbishop of Australia in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. Archbishop Ezekiel was an assistant bishop in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America from 1950 to 1959. He had served as a bishop in Boston and Chicago. He had been assistant director of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1943 and became director in 1949. Timotheos Evangelinidis ( el, Τιμόθεος Ευαγγελινίδης; 23 April 1880 in Polichnitos, Lesbos – 6 October 1949 in Istanbul), was a Greek priest and Greek Orthodox bishop who presided over the Metropolis of Australia and New Zealand from 1931 to 1947, and the Metropolis of Rhodes from 1947 to 1949. The Church of Greece ( el, Ἐκκλησία τῆς Ἑλλάδος, Ekklēsía tē̂s Helládos, ), part of the wider Greek Orthodox Church, is one of the autocephalous churches which make up the communion of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Christoforos Knitis
Christoforos Knitis (Greek: Χριστόφορος Κνιτής; 17 December 1872, in Samos, Greece – 7 August 1959, in Samos, Greece) was a Greek priest and Greek Orthodox bishop in the Metropolis of Australia and New Zealand from 1924 to 1928. Overview Knitis was born on 17 December 1872 and baptised Charidemos. He was born and raised in Vathi, on the island of Samos, and was the son of Charidemos Knitis and his wife Fioritsa. He studied at the University of Athens, and studied theology at the Theological School of Halki. He was made deacon in on 19 July 1898 and took the name Christoforos. He became a teacher at his old high school, Pythagoreion Gymnasion, on Samos. In 1905, he spent a year studying theology and English at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and transferred to the University of Oxford where he graduated in 1909.
