Greek Islands is a restaurant in Chicago, Illinois, founded by Konstantinos Koutsogeorgas and located at 200 S. Halsted Street in the Greektown neighborhood to the immediate west of downtown Chicago. History The restaurant was founded in 1971, and does a thriving business to good reviews. Similar to other Greek restaurants in Chicago, it serves saganaki, but has above-average seafood. In January 2008 it was featured on the Food Network's '' The Hungry Detective''. Halsted Street is a major north-south street in the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois. Location In Chicago's grid system, Halsted Street marks 800 West, west of State Street, from Grace Street (3800 N) in Lakeview south to the city limits at the Little Calumet River (13000 S) in West Pullman, a length of 168 north-south Chicago blocks. Greektown is a social and dining district, located on the Near West Side of the United States' city of Chicago, Illinois. Today, Greektown consists mostly of restaurants and businesses, although a cultural museum and an annual parade and festival still remain in the neighborhood. The district can be found along Halsted Street, between Van Buren and Madison Streets. In Greek cuisine, saganaki (Greek σαγανάκι) is any one of a variety of dishes prepared in a small frying pan, the best-known being an appetizer of fried cheese. It is commonly flambéed in North America. Etymology The dishes are named for the frying pan in which they are prepared, called a ''saganaki'', which is a diminutive of ''sagani'', a frying pan with two handles, which comes from the Turkish word ''sahan'' 'copper dish', itself borrowed from Arabic صحن (ṣaḥn). Description The cheese used in ''saganaki'' is usually graviera, kefalograviera, halloumi, kasseri, kefalotyri, or sheep's milk feta cheese. Lombard is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States, and a suburb of Chicago. The population was 43,165 at the 2010 census. The United States Census Bureau estimated the population in 2019 to be 44,303. History Originally part of Potawatomi Native American landscape, the Lombard area was first settled by Americans of European descent in the 1830s. Lombard shares its early history with Glen Ellyn. Brothers Ralph and Morgan Babcock settled in a grove of trees along the DuPage River. In what was known as Babcock's Grove, Lombard developed to the east and Glen Ellyn to the west.
