Romanian Greek Catholic Major Archeparchy Of Făgăraș And Alba Iulia
The Archeparchy of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia, ( la, Archidioecesis Fagarasiensis et Albae Iuliensis Romenorum) in Romanian ''Arhieparhia de Făgăraș și Alba Iulia'', is the only archeparchy of the Romanian Church United with Rome (Romanian Greek-Catholic Church). Its Metropolitan, who holds the rank of Major Archbishop, is the head of the Greek Catholic (also known as Byzantine Rite) Church in Romania. The title of "Major Archbishop" is one of only four such posts in the world. The suffragan dioceses in Romania are: ( Cluj–Gherla, Lugoj, Maramureș, Oradea Mare, Saint Basil the Great of Bucharest). Only the diocese in America, the Romanian Greek Catholic Eparchy of St George, is exempt. The Eparchy of St. George takes part in the Church's synod. The Greek Catholic diocese of Oradea Mare is the Eparchy of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church for the area of Oradea. It was founded in 1777, followers of the Greek Rite having been up to that time under the jurisdiction of the Latin bishop. Originally the see was a suffragan of Esztergom (Gran); when, however, in 1853 the Greek Catholic ''Diocese of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia'' became the Archdiocese of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia, the diocese of Oradea Mare was transferred to its jurisdiction. The see is divided into six archidiaconates and 19 vice-archidiaconates. Florentin Crihălmeanu (17 September 1959 – 12 January 2021) was a Romanian Greek Catholic hierarch. Life Born in Iași to a Greek-Catholic father and a Roman Catholic mother, he graduated from high school in Cluj-Napoca in 1978. He performed his military service in Turda in 1978–79. In 1984, he graduated from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, working as an engineer until 1990 first in Bistrița and then in Cluj-Napoca. He began private theological lessons in 1986 and was ordained priest in September 1990, following the collapse of the communist regime and legalization of the church. Sent to Rome to deepen his studies, he took degrees in Theology in 1992 and 1994 from the Pontifical Urbaniana University. Upon returning to Romania, he taught courses at the seminary in Cluj-Napoca and at Babeș-Bolyai University. Iuliu Hossu
Iuliu Hossu (30 January 1885 – 28 May 1970) was a Romanian Greek-Catholic prelate who served as the Bishop of Cluj-Gherla. Pope Paul VI elevated Hossu to the rank of cardinal '' in pectore'', that is, secretly, in 1969 but did not publish his appointment until after Hossu's death. The Communist authorities arrested Bishop Hossu on 28 October 1948. From 1950 to 1955 he was detained as political prisoner at the Sighet Prison. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest and died in 1970. Pope Francis confirmed Hossu and six other prelates' beatification in 2019 and it was celebrated in Blaj, Romania on 2 June 2019. Pope Francis personally presided over the beatification as well.
