Greece–Spain Relations
Both Greece and Spain are members of the European Union, NATO, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the OECD, the Union for the Mediterranean, and the United Nations. History In ancient times, parts of the Mediterranean coast of Spain were colonized by Greeks (Emporion/Empúries and Rhodha/ Roses, Girona, plus Zacantha/Sagunt and Dianion/ Denia near Valencia). In the late Middle Ages, parts of Greece came under Aragonese rule (the Duchy of Athens and the Duchy of Neopatras). The Renaissance painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos (better known as El Greco) was of Greek descent, as is Queen Sophia of Spain. Another cultural link between the two countries is the Sephardi Jewish community of Greece, particularly the Jews of Thessaloniki, who traditionally spoke Judaeo-Spanish. Duchy Of Neopatras
The Duchy of Neopatras ( ca, Ducat de Neopàtria; scn, Ducatu di Neopatria; gr, Δουκάτο Νέων Πατρών; la, Ducatus Neopatriae) was a principality in southern Thessaly, established in 1319. Officially part of the Kingdom of Sicily, itself part of the Crown of Aragon, the duchy was governed in conjunction with the neighbouring Duchy of Athens, it enjoyed a large degree of self-government. From the mid-14th century, the duchies entered a period of decline: most of the Thessalian possessions were lost to the Serbian Empire, internal dissensions arose, along with the menace of Turkish piracy in the Aegean and the onset of Ottoman expansion in the Balkans. Spain–Turkey Relations
The Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Turkey maintain diplomatic relations. Spain has an embassy in Ankara and a consulate general in Istanbul.
