Greatest Hits (Black Sabbath Album)
''Greatest Hits'' is a compilation album from Black Sabbath, released by Universal in 2009. This album features only the original line-up of Black Sabbath with most of the albums Ozzy Osbourne worked on presented. This compilation features songs from 1970's self-titled debut album to ''Sabbath Bloody Sabbath'', as well as one song from '' Never Say Die!''. This compilations used the same masters from the Universal 2009 album remasters. A similar compilation of the same name was released outside North America by NEMS Records in 1977. The album was re-released in 2012 as '' Iron Man: The Best of Black Sabbath'' with identical track listing but different artwork. Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath were an English rock music, rock band formed in Birmingham in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward (musician), Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. They are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. "Fairies Wear Boots" is a song by the English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, appearing on their 1970 album ''Paranoid''. It was released in 1971 as the B-side to the single "After Forever". On original 1970 US copies of the ''Paranoid'' album, the song's intro was listed under the title "Jack the Stripper", formatted as "Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots". The song has been ranked the 11th best Black Sabbath song by author Christoph Rehe. Background The exact inspiration behind "Fairies Wear Boots" is unclear. Bill Ward (musician)
William Thomas Ward (born 5 May 1948) is an English drummer. He was a co-founder and the original drummer for the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Ward helped found Black Sabbath in 1969 alongside bandmates Ozzy Osbourne (lead singer), Tony Iommi (guitarist) and Geezer Butler (bass). Biography Early years and Black Sabbath Bill started to play drums as a child, listening to the big bands of the 1940s; his early major influences were Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson. Terence Michael Joseph "Geezer" Butler (born 17 July 1949) is a English musician and songwriter. He is best known as the bassist and primary lyricist of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. He has also recorded and performed with Heaven & Hell, GZR, and Ozzy Osbourne. Butler was the bassist of Deadland Ritual, which has since disbanded. Mellotron
The Mellotron is an electro-mechanical musical instrument developed in Birmingham, England, in 1963. It is played by pressing its keys, each of which pushes a length of magnetic tape against a capstan, which pulls it across a playback head. As the key is released, the tape is retracted by a spring to its initial position. Different portions of the tape can be played to access different sounds. The Mellotron evolved from the similar Chamberlin, but could be mass-produced more efficiently. The first models were designed for the home and contained a variety of sounds, including automatic accompaniments. Bandleader Eric Robinson and television personality David Nixon helped promote the first instruments, and celebrities such as Princess Margaret were early adopters. Anthony Frank Iommi () (born 19 February 1948) is a British musician. He co-founded the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath, and was the band's guitarist, leader and primary composer and sole continuous member for nearly five decades. Iommi was ranked number 25 in ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". On his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, as a teenager, Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand in an accident, an event which crucially impacted his playing style. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (song)
"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is the opening title track of English heavy metal band Black Sabbath's 1973 album of the same name. Its main riff has been cited as "the riff that saved Black Sabbath" because Tony Iommi, who wrote most of the band's music, had been suffering from writer's block. They resorted to drastic measures (including renting out the supposedly haunted Clearwell Castle to live in) to inspire him.
