Greater Shepparton
The City of Greater Shepparton is a local government area in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia, located in the north-east part of the state. It covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 66,007. It includes the city of Shepparton and the towns of Arcadia, Ardmona, Congupna, Dookie, Grahamvale, Kialla, Lemnos, Merrigum, Mooroopna, Murchison, Tallygaroopna, Tatura, Toolamba and Undera. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the City of Shepparton, Shire of Shepparton, and parts of the Shire of Rodney, Shire of Euroa, Shire of Goulburn, Shire of Tungamah, Shire of Violet Town and Shire of Waranga. The City is governed and administered by the Greater Shepparton City Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Shepparton, it also has a service centre located in Tatura. Shepparton () ( Yortayorta: ''Kanny-goopna'') is a city located on the floodplain of the Goulburn River in northern Victoria, Australia, approximately north-northeast of Melbourne. As of the 2021 census, the estimated population of Shepparton, including the adjacent town of Mooroopna, was 68,409. It began as a sheep station and river crossing in the mid-19th century, before undergoing a major transformation as a railway town. Today it is an agricultural and manufacturing centre, and the centre of the Goulburn Valley irrigation system, one of the largest centres of irrigation in Australia. The Shire of Euroa was a local government area about northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1879 until 1994. History Euroa was originally within the Shire of Benalla (1868), and was severed and incorporated on 3 November 1879, as the Shire of Euroa. It lost parts of several ridings when the Shire of Violet Town was created on 11 April 1895, and part of its North Riding was annexed to the Shire of Shepparton on 24 May 1911. The Shire of Rodney was a local government area in the Goulburn Valley region, about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia, located between Kyabram and Shepparton. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1886 until 1994. History Rodney was initially part of the Waranga Road District, which was incorporated in 1863, and became a shire two years later. Undera, Victoria
Undera is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of northern Victoria, Australia. The town in the City of Greater Shepparton local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne and north-west of the regional centre of Shepparton. At the , Undera and the surrounding area had a population of 545, declining to just 442 by 2016. History In 1874, when the area came under farm-selection activity, a township was surveyed and named Undera, the Post Office opening on 24 August 1875. It is thought that the name is derived from an Aboriginal word, most likely meaning fat. Before being named Undera, the area was known as Mundoona. A school was opened in 1876, and Catholic and Presbyterian churches were opened the following year. The Undera district extends northwards to Undera North and a westerly bend of the Goulburn River. Toolamba, Victoria
Toolamba is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. It is in the City of Greater Shepparton local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Toolamba and the surrounding area had a population of 873. The Post Office opened on 1 January 1873. After the arrival of the railway this office closed and a Toolamba East office opened near the station, which was renamed Toolamba in 1895. The railway station of the same name is located on the Goulburn Valley railway line opened in 1880, but was closed to passenger traffic in 1987. The station also serves as a junction with the line to Echuca. Tatura, Victoria
Tatura is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia, and is situated within the City of Greater Shepparton local government area, north of the state capital (Melbourne) and west of the regional centre of Shepparton. At the 2016 census, Tatura had a population of 4,669. During World War II, several internment camps were set up around Tatura by the Australian government. Four of these were for "enemy alien" civilians, and three were for prisoners of war. Between 1940 and 1947, there were 10,000 to 13,000 people in the internment camps at different times. With a large corporate and manufacturing presence within the town, Tatura is a major employer within the Goulburn Valley. Tallygaroopna () is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. The town is on the Goulburn Valley Highway in the City of Greater Shepparton local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Tallygaroopna had a population of 600. History The large Tallygaroopna station was established in the 1840s by Edward Khull and two years later was sold to Sherbourne Sheppard, who later lent his name to the nearby city of Shepparton. The station was broken up for closer settlement in the 1870s, the Post Office opening on 7 December 1875. Murchison is a small riverside rural village located on the Goulburn River in Victoria, Australia. Murchison is located 167 kilometres from Melbourne and is just to the west of the Goulburn Valley Highway between Shepparton and Nagambie. The surrounding countryside contains orchards, vineyards and dairy farms and also HM Prison Dhurringile. At the , Murchison had a population of 925. Mooroopna, Victoria
Mooroopna is a rural town located north of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is on the banks of the Goulburn River opposite the larger town of Shepparton. The Midland Highway crosses the river between the two towns. At the 2016 census, Mooroopna had a population of 7,942. History The name Mooroopna was used by the original Kaieltheban tribe living in the area and meant 'deep water hole'. This refers to a very deep part of the Goulburn River behind the old Mooroopna Hall. The Kaielthebans (population 50 in 1841) were part of the Yorta Yorta Nation living in the region before the arrival of Europeans. Two entrepreneurs, Joseph Hawdon and Charles Bonney, camped on the edge of Gemmill's Swamp, close to Mooroopna, in January 1838.
