Greater Clark County Schools
Greater Clark County Schools is a public school district serving sections of Clark County, Indiana. The district is the largest in the county, out of three, and one of the largest in southern Indiana. The district operates 20 schools located in Jeffersonville, Utica, Charlestown, New Washington, and Clarksville. The current superintendent is Mark Laughner. Administration The corporation is led by a superintendent, who oversees the day-to-day operation of the district and is appointed by the school board; the board, elected at large in the district's service area, has responsibility for fiscal matters, hiring, firing, and other responsibilities. Utica, Indiana
Utica is a town in Utica Township, Clark County, Indiana, United States. The population was 776 at the 2010 census. History From 1794 to 1825, Utica was a popular ferry crossing, as ferry crossings were considered too dangerous at Jeffersonville, due to inexperienced ferry operators and the Falls of the Ohio. James Noble Wood, the founder of Utica, was the first ferryman in the area, and he served as one of only a handful of territorial judges in "Indian Territory" during this period. After a flood in 1997, Utica grew because it was required to strengthen its building, planning, and zoning laws in order to obtain Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Indiana DNR rebuilding funds. Charlestown, Indiana
Charlestown is a city located within Charlestown Township, in Clark County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,775 at the 2020 census. History Charlestown was established in 1808, named after one of its surveyors, Charles Beggs, upon , of which was designated for a town square. It was established one mile (1.6 km) northeast of Springville, and was responsible for Springville's demise. Milling was important to the town, as the first mill was built in the area, on Fourteen Mile Creek, in 1804. This mill would be abandoned when John Work built a mill by use of a tunnel in 1814. Today, that mill is part of the Tunnel Mill Scout Reservation. Clarksville, Indiana
Clarksville is a town in Clark County, Indiana, United States, along the Ohio River and is a part of the Louisville Metropolitan area. The population was 22,333 at the 2020 census. Charlestown High School is a public high school located in Charlestown, Indiana. The school serves students in grades 9 through 12 from Charlestown, Otisco and Marysville. The current principal is Amy Cook. History On November 14, 2006, the Greater Clark County Schools board voted 7-0 to build a new Charlestown High School. The new school would consist of 100 acres (as opposed to the current building's 30-40 acres) and is intended to educate 900 to over 1000 students. Students were officially allowed into the new Charlestown High School on January 4, 2010. The whole school was expected to be finished by no later than 2011. The last basketball game played in Charlestown High School's Dunn Arena was on February 26, 2010, the arena was 55 years old. Clarksville Community School Corporation is a public school system serving Clarksville, Indiana. The current enrollment is approximately 1,364 students at three schools.
