Great Northern Tunnel
The Great Northern Tunnel is a double-tracked railway tunnel under downtown Seattle, Washington, completed by the Great Northern Railway in 1905, and now owned by the BNSF Railway, on its Scenic Subdivision. At the time it was built, it was the tallest and widest tunnel in the United States, at high and wide. The southern portal is just north of King Street Station, and the northern in Victor Steinbrueck Park, between Virginia and Pine Streets. The Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel passes four feet below the Great Northern Tunnel. Freight and passenger trains use the tunnel, including Amtrak service to Chicago (the ''Empire Builder'') and Vancouver, B.C. Scenic Subdivision
The Scenic Subdivision or Scenic Sub is a railroad line running about 155 miles (249 km) from Seattle, Washington to Wenatchee, Washington. It is operated by BNSF Railway as part of their Northern Transcon. This route includes the Cascade Tunnel, as well as the 1893 site of the "last spike" near Scenic, Washington, which marked the completion for the Great Northern Railway (U.S.), Great Northern Railway transcontinental railway line built by James J. Hill. Current operations are limited to 30 trains per day due to ventilation capacity with the Cascade Tunnel. Victor Steinbrueck Park is a 0.8 acre (3,000 m²) park in Downtown Seattle, Washington (state), Washington, United States, located just northwest of Pike Place Market overlooking Elliott Bay. Named for the Seattle-based architect Victor Steinbrueck, it is positioned between Western Avenue and the Alaskan Way Viaduct at the foot of Virginia Street. Sounder commuter rail is a commuter rail service operated by BNSF on behalf of Sound Transit. Service operates Monday through Friday during peak hours from Seattle, Washington, north to Everett and south to Lakewood.
