Great American Gingerbread
''Great American Gingerbread: Rasputina Rarities & Neglected Items'' is a limited collector's edition compilation album by American cello rock band Rasputina. It was released on April 5, 2011. The compilation contains a CD of previously unreleased tracks composed of film scores, demos, compilation tracks and tribute pieces which frontwoman Melora Creager describes as "essentially solo works, erinitial compositions and impulses." It also contains a Bonus DVD that includes a live performance as well as Q&A session recorded in 2002 at the Knitting Factory, in New York City. Release Promotion As early as March 2011, the song "Ballad of Lizzie Borden" has been available for free download via SoundCloud's website as a way to promote and generate interest for the new record. Rasputina (band)
Rasputina is an American rock band based in New York City, known for their unconventional music style, as well as their fascination with historical allegories and fashion, especially those pertaining to the Victorian era. The group is fronted by cellist/vocalist Melora Creager, who writes the music and lyrics and creates art for the band's albums, singles, and website. History In 1989, Creager wrote a manifesto, and placed an ad in The Village Voice seeking women to form an electric cello choir. Julia Kent, then an editor at the Village Voice, was the first respondent. The original group of nine was whittled to three. They named themselves "Rasputina", after one of Creager's songs. Melora Creager
Melora Creager (born March 25, 1966) is an American cellist, singer-songwriter, performing artist and founder of the rock band Rasputina. Early life, beginnings and Rasputina Born in Kansas City, Missouri, and adopted by a graphic designer and physicist, Creager was raised in Emporia, Kansas. She started studying music at the age of 5, and at age 9 began playing the cello. As a child she was also a member of the Wichita Youth Symphony. Though she briefly quit playing in her teen years, after Creager moved to the east coast to attend Philadelphia College of Art and Parsons School of Design, she was convinced by friends to take it up again. In the late 1980s she played with the New York indie rock band Ultra Vivid Scene. In 1991, Creager founded alternative cello ensemble Rasputina by writing a manifesto and placing a want-ad in the Village Voice stating "electric cellists wanted". Sister Kinderhook
Sister Kinderhook is the sixth full-length album from American rock band Rasputina. It was released on June 15, 2010. The new album brings with it a fresh lineup in the form of Daniel DeJesus in place of Sarah Bowman in second chair and Catie D'Amica replacing Jonathon Tebeest on drums and percussion. D'Amica was present during the inception, recording and production of the album, however, she has since left the group in order to, as Creager jokes, "go to massage therapy school". She was replaced by Creager's friend, Julie Griner for one show. More recently, Melissa Bell has been drafted into the lineup as percussionist. Another new addition to Rasputina's repertoire is the heavy use of the banjo which replaces the dulcimer featured prominently in the last two albums. ''Unknown'' is the seventh full-length studio album by American cello rock band Rasputina. It was released exclusively on CD through Melora Creager's website on April 10, 2015, and is unlikely to ever be released in digital format – in response to Creager's websites, social media accounts and her own computer being hacked by an identity thief. Background and recording In 2012, Creager formed the five-piece narrative musical project Fa La La: the Bastardy of Shakespeare's Madrigals. Inspired by the Madrigal works of Elizabethan author Thomas Weelkes, the project expands on the Oxfordian theory of Shakespeare authorship – the claim that Edward de Vere wrote the plays and poems traditionally attributed to William Shakespeare – by alleging that Weelkes was another pseudonym used by de Vere, and that the music of Weelkes could be seen as scores to Shakespeare's plays. The Knitting Factory is a nightclub in New York City that features eclectic music and entertainment. After opening in 1987, various other locations were opened in the United States. The Knitting Factory gave its audience poetry readings, performance art, standup comedy, and musicians who transcended the usual boundaries of rock and jazz, often experimental music. The Kinks
