Graysdale is an unincorporated community in Patton Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States, located at . History and geography The Red Bank Branch of the Bellefonte Central Railroad, from Mattern Junction to Red Bank, was built through the town ''circa'' 1887. The branch was built to carry iron ore, the mining of which supported Graysdale and other local towns. It was cut back to end in Graysdale in 1894 due to the shutdown of Bellefonte Furnace, the principal consumer of the local ore; however, the furnace re-opened under new management in the 1890s, and was back to near-full capacity by 1900. Ore mining resumed, the line from Graysdale to Mattern Bank was re-laid in 1900, and a new branch was built from Graysdale to Scotia; however, the furnace was unable to compete with more modern iron and steel mills, and shut down again, permanently in 1910. Patton Township is a township in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the State College, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 15,801 at the 2020 census, which is a 3.2% increase from the 2010 census. Patton Township is served by the Patton Township Police Department and Alpha Fire Company. Alpha Fire Company maintains one of its two substations in Patton Township. History Patton Township was established in 1794 and named after Colonel John Patton, a revolutionary officer, who co-owned the Centre Furnace, along with Colonel Samuel Miles. The Peter Gray family and the Conrad Hartsock family were the earliest settlers to the area. Bellefonte Central Railroad
The Bellefonte Central Railroad was a shortline connecting Bellefonte and State College, Pennsylvania. Constructed in the late 19th century to haul local iron ore to furnaces in the Bellefonte region, it later hauled freight traffic to Penn State and lime for steelmaking from local quarries. The line to State College was abandoned in 1974, and most of the remaining railroad in 1984, but a small portion is still used by the Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad. History Predecessors The railroad was originally incorporated on September 21, 1882, as the Bellefonte and Buffalo Run Railroad. The purpose of this line was to connect Bellefonte with Pennsylvania State College, and to tap the iron ore deposits along Buffalo Run. Scotia was an American village that was located in Patton Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania, at . Although the community was called Scotia, the name of the local post office was Benore. (''Ben'' is Gaelic for "mountain f but further etymology of the name is unknown.) History This village got its start when Andrew Carnegie, through the Edgar Thomson Steel Company, leased large tracts of township land that had iron ore. Nittany Valley
Nittany Valley is an eroded anticlinal valley located in Centre County, Pennsylvania. It is separated from the Bald Eagle Valley by Bald Eagle Mountain and from Penns Valley by Mount Nittany. The valley is closed to the north by a high plateau that joins these two mountain ridges, but is open to the south at the southern terminus of Mount Nittany. The valley drains to Bald Eagle Creek through water gaps in Bald Eagle Mountain formed by Spring Creek and Fishing Creek, along with smaller streams running through Curtain Gap and Howard Gap.
