Grass Flat, California
Grass Flat is an unincorporated community and ghost town in northwestern Sierra County, California, United States. Geography Grass Flat is on Port Wine Ridge Road in the Sierra Nevada, within Plumas National Forest. The site is southwest of Mount Fillmore. History Grass Flat was established as a gold mining camp during the California Gold Rush (1848-1850s), in the far northern Northern Mines District. The scarred landscapes from hydraulic mining during the gold rush, at Grass Flat and nearby, remain primarily barren of vegetation over 160 years later. Ponds fill the depressions formed by the hydraulic surface mining technique. The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) was a gold rush that began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. The sudden influx of gold into the money supply reinvigorated the American economy; the sudden population increase allowed California to go rapidly to statehood, in the Compromise of 1850.
