Basile Gras
General Basile Gras (2 January 1836 – 14 April 1901) created the Gras rifle for the French Army in 1874 by converting the Mle 1866 Chassepot rifle to fire metallic cartridges. Felix Gras
Félix Gras ( Malemort-du-Comtat, May 3, 1844 – Avignon, March 4, 1901) was a Provençal poet and novelist. Biography Gras was born into a farming family and went to secondary school at the college of Sainte Garde, in Saint Didier. He studied law as a clerk to the notary Jules Giéia in Avignon, later becoming a notary himself, but also enthusiastically attended poetry meetings where he read his first poems. Soon abandoning his law training, Gras published '' Li Carbounié'' (''The Charcoal-burners''), a rustic epic poem in twelve cantos, in 1876, noted for its "elemental passion" and scenic descriptions, for which he gained immediate recognition. In 1879, he married the niece of Joseph Roumanille, the husband of his sister Rose Anaïs. His next work, '' Toloza'', an epic poem about the invasion of the Albigenses by Simon de Montfort, came in 1882, to further acclaim. Patricia Elizabeth Gras (born August 12, 1960) is an American journalist, television anchor, reporter and producer. Early life and education Gras was born in Houston, Texas of Argentinian parents. In 1962, they moved back to Mendoza, Argentina, where she grew up. In 1972, she moved back to the United States with her parents. Resettled in Houston, she attended Saint Agnes Academy in 1979 and went on to get a bachelor's degree at Texas A&M University. She received master's degrees from the Thunderbird School of Global Management, from the ESADE in Barcelona, Spain and in 1990 in Journalism from Columbia University in New York City. While in Spain, Gras learned Catalan, her fifth spoken language besides Spanish, English, French, and Italian. The Fusil Modèle 1874 or Gras was the French Army's primary service rifle from 1874 to 1886. Designed by Colonel Basile Gras, the Gras was a metallic cartridge adaptation of the single-shot, breech-loading, black powder Chassepot rifle. It was developed from 1872 to 1874 as a response to the German adoption of the Mauser Model 1871 metallic cartridge rifle. Modified in 1880 as the M80 with an improved breechblock and in 1914 as the M14 to accommodate the 8×50mmR Lebel smokeless powder cartridge, the Gras was replaced as the standard-issue service rifle by the Lebel in 1886. Description Converted from the Chassepot, the Gras was in caliber and used black powder centerfire metallic cartridges with a bullet over a charge. It was a robust and hard-hitting single-shot weapon. Additionally it had a triangular-shaped Model 1874 "Gras" sword bayonet. The Gras rifle was replaced from 1886 by the Lebel rifle.
