Granville Harcourt-Vernon (1816–1861)
Granville Edward Harcourt-Vernon (23 November 1816 – 1 February 1861) was a British Conservative Party politician. Background Harcourt-Vernon was the eldest son of Granville Harcourt-Vernon, sixth son of the Most Reverend Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt, Archbishop of York. His mother was Frances Julia, daughter of Anthony Hardolph Eyre. Political career Harcourt-Vernon was a member of the Canterbury Association from 8 November 1851 and immediately joined the management committee. Harcourt-Vernon was returned to the House of Commons at the 1852 general election as one of the two Members of Parliament (MPs) for Newark, but did not stand again at the 1857 election. Family Harcourt-Vernon married Lady Selina Catherine, daughter of Richard Meade, 3rd Earl of Clanwilliam, in 1854. He died in February 1861, aged 44. Baron Vernon
Baron Vernon, of Kinderton in the County of Chester, is a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1762 for the former Member of Parliament George Venables-Vernon. He had previously represented Lichfield and Derby in the House of Commons. Born George Vernon, he was the son of Henry Vernon (see Vernon family), of Sudbury in Derbyshire, and Anne Pigott, daughter and heiress of Thomas Pigott by his wife Mary Venables, sister and heiress of Sir Peter Venables, Baron of Kinderton in Cheshire. In 1728, he assumed by Royal Licence the additional surname of Venables upon inheriting the Venables estate in Cheshire from his childless cousin Anne, widow of the 2nd Earl of Abingdon. Henry Pelham Alexander Pelham-Clinton, 6th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (25 January 1834 – 22 February 1879) was an English nobleman, styled Lord Clinton until 1851 and Earl of Lincoln until he inherited the dukedom in 1864. Pelham-Clinton was the son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle and his wife Lady Susan Hamilton. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. His political career was limited to sitting as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Newark (UK Parliament constituency), Newark between 1857 and 1859. John Henry Manners-Sutton (4 August 1822 – 5 July 1898), was a British Conservative politician. Background A member of the Manners family headed by the Duke of Rutland, Manners Sutton was the son of Reverend Frederick Manners-Sutton, son of John Manners-Sutton. His mother was Lady Henrietta Barbara (1796-1864), daughter of John Lumley, 7th Earl of Scarbrough. Political career Manners-Sutton entered Parliament as one of two representatives for Newark in 1847 (succeeded his kinsman Lord John Manners), a seat he held until 1857. He was appointed High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 1863. Family Manners-Sutton married Mary Jemima, daughter of Reverend Gustavus Burnaby, on 21 April 1853. She was sister of Frederick Gustavus Burnaby. Manners-Sutton died at Kelham, Nottinghamshire, in July 1898, aged 72. His wife died on 17 March 1904, aged 75. Sir John Stuart (1793 – 29 October 1876) was a British Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1846 to 1852, before becoming a judge. Early life Stuart was the son of Dugald Stuart, of Ballachulish in Argyll. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in November 1819. Career He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the borough of Newark-on-Trent at an unopposed by-election in January 1846. The borough was at that time under the patronage of the under the patronage of the Dukes of Newcastle-under-Lyne, and the 4th Duke was a staunch Conservative and protectionist. Richard Charles Francis Christian Meade, 3rd Earl of Clanwilliam GCH (15 August 1795 – 7 October 1879), styled Lord Gillford between 1800 and 1805, was a British diplomat and politician. In the 1857 United Kingdom general election, the Whigs, led by Lord Palmerston, won a majority in the House of Commons as the Conservative vote fell significantly. The election had been provoked by a vote of censure in Palmerston's government over his approach to the ''Arrow'' affair which led to the Second Opium War.
