Granduc Mine
Overlooking the Salmon Glacier, the Granduc Mine is a large copper mine which is situated on a rock ridge between a glacier and a cliff, some north of Stewart, BC at the north end of Summit Lake. It was an active mine from 1964 to 1984, having closed due to low copper prices. Location The mine and its camp are inside the District Municipality of Stewart, connected by an access road connected to Hyder, Alaska and is situated on the Portland inlet. The mine site at Granduc has 17 km of access tunnel and a 54 km haulage road, which saw upgrades that began in June 2011. Exploration First discovered in 1931, the property saw limited exploration in 1991 and again 1993 after its dormancy until 2005 when new exploration reopened interest in the property. Salmon Glacier
The Salmon Glacier is a glacier located ~ north of Stewart, British Columbia, and Hyder, Alaska, just on the Canadian side of the border. The glacier, one of hundreds in the Boundary Ranges, is notable for its major potential as a natural hazard. Summit Lake is located at the northern end of the glacier and every year around mid-July the lake breaks an ice-dam and then flows under the Salmon Glacier into the Salmon River. This causes the river to rise approximately for several days. The glacier can be accessed by road from Hyder, Alaska, from early July to late September. The glacier's name was officially adopted January 20, 1955, by the Geographical Names Board of Canada. Stewart is a district municipality at the head of the Portland Canal in northwestern British Columbia, Canada, near the Alaskan panhandle. In 2011, its population was about 494. History The Nisga'a, who live around the Nass River, called the head of Portland Canal , meaning "safe house" or "strong house", probably because it served them as a retreat from the harassment of the Haida and Tlingit from the outer coast. They travelled in the area seasonally to pick berries and hunt birds. It and the rest of the Portland Canal had previously been the domain of the Tsetsaut people, also called the Skam-a-Kounst Indians, or in Nisga'a, an Athapaskan people who became decimated by war and disease and were driven out of the Stewart area by either Haida or Nisga'a in 1856–57. Hyder is a census-designated place in Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, Alaska, United States. The population was 87 at the 2010 census, down from 97 in 2000. Hyder is accessible by road only from Stewart, British Columbia, is popular with motorists wishing to visit Alaska without driving the length of the Alaska Highway, and is otherwise landlocked.
