Grandpa (comics)
Grandpa was a British comic strip which originally appeared in the magazine ''The Beano'' from 1955 to 1957, drawn by Ken Reid. It was later revived from 1971 until 1984, but this time by Robert Nixon and afterwards Jimmy Glen. Background ''Grandpa'' was first published in issue 680, illustrated by Ken Reid. It was a gag-a-day comic about a mischievous old bearded man. Some of the stories involved his dad, an even older man with an even longer beard than him. Despite their advanced ages, they enjoyed a father-son relationship similar to that of Dennis the Menace and his dad; a typical story would be about Grandpa getting involved in some kind of mischief, being caught by his father and ending up getting a spanking. In a June 1956 strip, Grandpa was revealed to have been born in 1874, making his age 82. In 1957 the series was terminated. From 1971 until 1984 ''Grandpa'' was relaunched. Ken Reid (comics Artist)
Ken Reid (1919–1987) was a British comic artist and writer, best known as the co-creator of ''Roger the Dodger'' and ''Jonah (comics), Jonah'' for ''The Beano'' and Faceache for ''Jet (comic), Jet'' (later appeared in ''Buster (comic), Buster''). Biography Born in Manchester, Reid drew from an early age. Robert Nixon (artist)
Robert Nixon (7 July 1939 – 22 October 2002) was an artist who worked on several British comics. Biography Early life and education Nixon was born in South Bank, Middlesbrough, in North Yorkshire on 7 July 1939. He was the fifth of six children born to Arthur Nixon and Phylis Thompson. Robert's mother Phylis worked as a housewife while his father worked locally as a steelworker. As a child, Nixon spent much of his time drawing and sketching, and his artistic skills were recognised when he was seven years old by teachers at Cromwell Road School which he attended in South Bank. During his early years as an artist, and supported by teachers at the Central Secondary Modern School (Victoria Street, Southbank), Nixon won several art competitions and a scholarship to Middlesbrough Art College in 1955 when he was sixteen. ''Dennis the Menace and Gnasher'' (originally titled ''Dennis the Menace'' and currently titled ''Dennis and Gnasher)'' is a long-running comic strip in the British children's comic ''The Beano'', published by DC Thomson, of Dundee, Scotland. The comic stars a boy named Dennis the Menace and his Abyssinian wire-haired tripe hound Gnasher. The strip first appeared in issue 452, dated 17 March 1951, and on sale from 12 March 1951. It is the longest-running strip in the comic. The idea and name of the character emerged when the comic's editor heard a British music hall song with the chorus "I'm Dennis the Menace from Venice". The creation of Dennis in the 1950s had sales of ''The Beano'' soar.
