Grand River National Grassland
Grand River National Grassland is a National Grassland in northwestern South Dakota, United States. It is named for the Grand River. The North and South forks of the rivers meet in the grassland. It has a land area of . In descending order of acreage it lies in parts of Perkins, Corson, and Ziebach counties. The portion in Corson County also lies within the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. The portion in Ziebach County also lies within the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. In the early 1900s, the area was settled by European immigrants under the Homestead Act. In the 1930s a severe drought along with high winds turned the area into a “Dust Bowl.” This time was known as the Great Depression and many of the settlers experienced great financial hardships Under the Agricultural Adjustment Act, the government purchased failed homesteads in order to minimize the economic hardships. Perkins County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,835. Its county seat is Bison. The county was established in 1908 and organized in 1909. It was named for Sturgis, South Dakota, official Henry E. Perkins. Geography Perkins County lies on the north edge of South Dakota. Its north boundary line abuts the south boundary line of the state of North Dakota. The Grand River flows eastward through the upper part of the county, and the Moreau River flows eastward through the lower part of the county. The portion in Sioux County lies within the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Within the grassland are topographic features such as level plains and rolling hills. South Dakota Highway 73
South Dakota Highway 73 (SD 73) is a state route that runs across western South Dakota. It begins at the Nebraska border north of Merriman, Nebraska, as a continuation of Nebraska Highway 61. It runs to the North Dakota border, where it continues as North Dakota Highway 49. It is just more than in length. History When designated in the 1920s, South Dakota 73 only consisted of the segment from Faith ( U.S. Route 212) to Lemmon (U.S. Route 12). The remainder of the route was unnumbered. Shadehill Reservoir
Shadehill Reservoir is a reservoir on the Grand River in Perkins County, South Dakota, USA. The lake was created by the construction of Shadehill Dam by the United States Bureau of Reclamation in 1951. The reservoir has two primary inflows: North Fork Grand River and South Fork Grand River. The single Grand River serves as the only outflow. Species of fish in the lake include walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, yellow perch, northern pike, and common carp. Shadehill Reservoir is the location of the Shadehill Recreation Area. Also nearby is the smaller Llewellyn Johns Recreation Area, with both managed by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks. The recreation area includes facilities for camping, swimming, picnicking and boating. Dakota Prairie Grasslands
The Dakota Prairie Grasslands (DPG) was formed in 1998. It consists of four U.S. Forest Service Ranger District offices that manage four National Grasslands: * North Dakota ** Cedar River National Grassland ** Little Missouri National Grassland ** Sheyenne National Grassland * South Dakota ** Grand River National Grassland History All of these ranger districts were formerly part of the Custer National Forest based in Billings, Montana.
