Grand Manan is a civil parish in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada, comprising one village and one local service district (LSD), both of which are members of the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission (SNBSC). The parish includes Grand Manan Island and numerous lesser islands, only one of which has permanent year-round inhabitants. Confusion is sometimes caused by other uses of the name: epenthesis of Grand Manan Island to Grand Manan; the village of Grand Manan; the census subdivision of Grand Manan Parish, which includes only White Head Island; and the assumption of an LSD with the name of Grand Manan, which never existed. Origin of name The parish takes its name from Grand Manan Island, which is often shortened to Grand Manan. The Anchorage Provincial Park
The Anchorage Provincial Park is a public park located on the south-east coast of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, Canada. The island, the largest in the Bay of Fundy, is also the primary island in the Grand Manan Archipelago, sitting at the boundary between the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine. Located between the communities of Grand Harbour and Seal Cove, the park is about south on Route 776 from the Coastal Transport Limited ferry terminal in the community of North Head. Activities The park offers a number of hiking and cycling trails. The Red Point Trail boardwalk is wheelchair accessible. Other trails are Long Pond, Great Pond and Bagley's. Individuals may also partake in sea kayaking, whale-watching and bird-watching at the park. As many as 275 different bird species can be seen on Grand Manan. White Head Island
White Head Island is an island located in the Bay of Fundy. It is off the east coast of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick. In 2011 the island had a population of 162. White Head Island is governed as a local service district. Its economy is based largely around aquaculture and fishing. The island has an elementary school which has kindergarten to grade 2 and grades 3 to 6 in two separate classrooms. Recently there have been efforts to move children to the larger Grand Manan Community School however the younger grades remain on White Head due to the ferry crossing. It's the smallest school within the Anglophone South School District of Southern New Brunswick. Coastal Transport Limited provides car ferry service between White Head and Grand Manan. Kent Island, New Brunswick, Canada is an island located near Grand Manan Island off the coast of New Brunswick. It is the site of the Bowdoin Scientific Research Station, which is mainly involved in bird and nature research. The island was donated to Bowdoin College in 1936 by John Sterling Rockefeller.
