Grand Junction, Colorado
Grand Junction is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 65,560 at the 2020 United States Census, making Grand Junction the 17th most populous Colorado municipality and the most populous city in western Colorado. Description Grand Junction is west-southwest of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. The city has a council–manager form of government. It is a major commercial and transportation hub within the large area between the Green River and the Continental Divide, and the largest city in Colorado outside of the Front Range Corridor. The city is along the Colorado River, at its confluence with the Gunnison River, which comes in from the south. Grand Junction Station
Grand Junction station is a train station in Grand Junction, Colorado, United States, that is served by Amtrak's ''California Zephyr'', which runs once daily between Chicago and Emeryville, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The station is adjacent to the original Denver and Rio Grande Depot. The original depot was built in 1906 and replaced by the current adjacent structure in 1992. The current station building was built in the late 1970s and originally used as a restaurant. Beginning in 1983, both the ''Desert Wind'' (with service from Chicago to Los Angeles) and the ''Pioneer'' (with service from Chicago to ''Seattle'') stopped at the Grand Junction Station. Service by the ''Pioneer'' was dropped when that train was rerouted through Wyoming in 1991 (the train was later discontinued altogether in 1997). The Grand Junction Jackalopes are an independent baseball team of the Pioneer League, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball (MLB) but is an MLB Partner League. Grand Junction High School (GJHS) is a public high school located in Grand Junction, Colorado, United States. It is part of the Mesa County Valley School District 51. It is one of four high schools located within the Grand Valley. History Originally founded in 1891, the school has been located at its current location on Fifth St. since 1956. In early 2022; an entirely new GJHS school building began construction, after the building is finished, the original building will be demolished. The ''Grand Junction Daily Sentinel'' is the largest daily newspaper in western Colorado, with distribution in six counties. History I.N. Bunting of Pennsylvania and Howard T. Lee founded the newspaper in 1893. In 1911, future U.S. Senator Walter Walker bought the newspaper. When he died in 1956, his son, Preston Walker, inherited the ''Sentinel'', managing it until he died in 1970. He left it to newspaper employee Ken Johnson, who sold it the company to Cox Newspapers in 1979. The new publisher, James C. Kennedy of the Cox family, left to become chairman and CEO of Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises in 1985. The corporation named George Orbanek publisher, who retired in 2007. Grand Junction Regional Airport is northeast of Grand Junction, in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. Owned by the Grand Junction Regional Airport Authority, it is the largest airport in western Colorado and third largest in the state, behind Denver International Airport and Colorado Springs Airport. Grand Junction Canal
The Grand Junction Canal is a canal in England from Braunston in Northamptonshire to the River Thames at Brentford, with a number of branches. The mainline was built between 1793 and 1805, to improve the route from the Midlands to London, by-passing the upper reaches of the River Thames near Oxford, thus shortening the journey. In 1927 the canal was bought by the Regent's Canal Company and, since 1 January 1929, has formed the southern half of the Grand Union Main Line from London to Birmingham. The canal is now much used by leisure traffic. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's last major undertaking was the compact Three Bridges, London, on the canal. Work began in 1856, and was completed in 1859. The Grand Junction Railway (GJR) was a short-line railway in Ontario, Canada. It ran between Peterborough, Ontario, Peterborough and Belleville, Ontario, Belleville. It was originally designed to be a loop, starting near Toronto and running northeast to Peterborough, then southeast to meet the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) on the banks of Lake Ontario.
