Grand Hotel (magazine)
''Grand Hotel'' is an Italian weekly women's magazine, published since 1946. The magazine is headquartered in Milan, Italy. History and profile Initially consisting of only sixteen pages, ''Grand Hotel'' started its publications on 29 June 1946, and, in spite of being heavily attacked by the Catholic press, it got an immediate commercial success. It was characterized during the first decades of its history by "cineromanzi", i.e. comic stories, generally of romantic or melodramatic genre, which were released Serial (literature), in sequential installments and whose comic characters resembled famous film actors. The success of the magazine almost immediately generated a series of imitations, notably ''Sogno'' and ''Film Bolero'', both published by Mondadori, and ''Letizia'' published by Lancio. Arnoldo Mondadori Editore () is the biggest publishing company in Italy. History The company was founded in 1907 in Ostiglia by 18-year-old Arnoldo Mondadori who began his publishing career with the publication of the magazine ''Luce!''. In 1912 he founded ''La Sociale'' and published the first book ''AiaMadama'' together with his close friend Tommaso Monicelli and the following year, ''La Lampada'', a series of children's books. Photo comics are a form of sequential storytelling that uses photographs rather than illustrations for the images, along with the usual comics conventions of narrative text and word balloons containing dialogue. They are sometimes referred to in English as fumetti, photonovels, photoromances, and similar terms. The photographs may be of real people in staged scenes, or posed dolls and other toys on sets. Although far less common than illustrated comics, photo comics have filled certain niches in various places and times. For example, they have been used to adapt popular film and television works into print, tell original melodramas, and provide medical education. Photo comics have been popular at times in Italy and Latin America, and to a lesser extent in English-speaking countries. In Italy there are many magazines. Following the end of World War II the number of weekly magazines significantly expanded. From 1970 feminist magazines began to increase in number in the country. The number of consumer magazines was 975 in 1995 and 782 in 2004. There are also Catholic magazines and newspapers in the country. A total of fifty-eight Catholic magazines was launched between 1867 and 1922. From 1923 to 1943, the period of the Italian fascism, Fascist Regime, only ten new Catholic magazines was started. The period from 1943 to the end of the Second Vatican Council thirty-three new magazines were established. Until 2010 an additional eighty-six Catholic magazines were founded.
