''Grand Forks'' is a 2007 concept album by Tom Brosseau. It is about the devastating Red River Flood of 1997 that struck Brosseau's hometown of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Produced and recorded by Gregory Page, co-produced by John Doe. Liner notes penned by Pat Owens & Ed Schafer. Grand Forks, North Dakota
Grand Forks is the third-largest city in the state of North Dakota (after Fargo and Bismarck) and the county seat of Grand Forks County. According to the 2020 census, the city's population was 59,166. Grand Forks, along with its twin city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, forms the center of the Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is often called Greater Grand Forks or the Grand Cities. Located on the western banks of the north-flowing Red River of the North, in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding. The Red River Flood of 1997 devastated the city. Hilary Hahn
Hilary Hahn (born November 27, 1979) is an American violinist. She has performed throughout the world as a soloist with leading orchestras and conductors and as a recitalist. She is an avid supporter of contemporary classical music, and several composers have written works for her, including concerti by Edgar Meyer and Jennifer Higdon, partitas by Antón García Abril, two serenades for violin and orchestra by Einojuhani Rautavaara, and a violin and piano sonata by Lera Auerbach. Early life and education Hahn was born in Lexington, Virginia, on November 27, 1979, and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Michael R. Brown is an American politician and doctor who served as the 26th mayor of Grand Forks, North Dakota from 2000 to 2020. Early life and education Brown was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the son of a United States Air Force jet mechanic. He spent his childhood in Japan and England before returning to New Mexico. Brown earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degree from Baylor University before joining the United States Air Force, where he served in the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) community. He served as a Deputy ICBM Launch Control Officer, ICBM Launch Control Officer Commander and ICBM Launch Control Officer Instructor. Edward Thomas Schafer (born August 8, 1946) is an American businessman and politician who was the 30th governor of North Dakota from 1992 to 2000. Schafer also served as the 29th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 2008 to 2009, appointed by President George W. Bush. From January to July 2016 he served as interim president of the University of North Dakota. Early life, education, and family Schafer was born and raised in Bismarck, North Dakota, and is the son of Marian Nelsen and businessman Harold Schafer. He is of German descent. Pat Owens
Patrica A. Owens (born 1941) was the mayor of Grand Forks, North Dakota during the flood that devastated the city in April 1997. She actively lobbied then-president Bill Clinton for funds to rebuild the city and construct a permanent flood protection system for the city and neighboring East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Political career Owens, born in 1941 in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, worked as the mayor's executive assistant for 33 years, before running for mayor herself in 1996. She received 76% of the vote and became Grand Forks' first female mayor. Then in 1997, after less than one year as mayor, the city was struck by the 1997 Red River Flood. Gregory Page (born April 28, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. Biography Page is the son of a traveling Armenian pop singer whom he would not meet for over 40 years. His Irish mother was the lead singer/saxophone player in one of Britain's first all-girl groups, The Beat-Chics, that toured with The Beatles. Born in North London, England, he was a shy boy, fond of books and pictures, a solitary rambler in the woods and fields around his country home in England. 1997 Red River Flood
The Red River flood of 1997 was a major flood that occurred in April and May 1997 along the Red River of the North in Minnesota, North Dakota, and southern Manitoba. It was the most severe flood of the river since 1826. The flood reached throughout the Red River Valley, affecting the cities of Fargo and Winnipeg, but none so greatly as Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, where floodwaters reached more than inland. They inundated virtually everything in the twin communities. Total damages for the Red River region were US$3.5 billion. The flood was the result of abundant snowfall and extreme temperatures. In Grand Forks, thousands of people, including Air Force personnel from Grand Forks Air Force Base, tried to prepare for the 1997 flood by building sandbag dikes. Tom Brosseau
Thomas Anderson Brosseau is an American musical storyteller and guitarist, born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota, United States. He was awarded Key to the City of Grand Forks by mayor Michael R. Brown in 2007, in part due to his original album of music, ''Grand Forks'', which was dedicated to the people along the Red River of the North who lived through the 1997 Red River flood. Early life Brosseau learned to play acoustic guitar from his grandmother. As Brosseau explains: "I grew up with music in the church, in the school, music at home.
