Baldwin, Nassau County, New York
Baldwin is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, on Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 33,919 at the time of the 2020 census. History Original inhabitants of the area between Parsonage Creek near Oceanside and Milburn Creek near Freeport were Native Americans known as the Meroke, or Merrick, a band of Lenape people who were indigenous to most of the South Shore of Long Island. They spoke an Algonquian language and lived in two villages along Milburn Creek. In 1643, English colonists began to call this area Hick's Neck, after two of Hempstead's early settlers, John Spragg from England and John Hicks from Flushing, New York. They extended Hempstead village south to the salt meadows. The grist mill built by John Pine in 1686 on Milburn Creek attracted more English settlers. Grand Avenue (BMT Myrtle Avenue Line)
The Grand Avenue station was a station on the demolished section of the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line in Brooklyn, New York City. The station was opened on April 27, 1889 at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Grand Avenue in Brooklyn next to the Myrtle Avenue station of the BMT Lexington Avenue Line, which opened four years earlier. It had two tracks and two side platforms, and had connections not only to that station, but also to Myrtle Avenue Line streetcars. The next southbound stop was Washington Avenue. The next northbound stop was Franklin Avenue. The connection to the Lexington Avenue el station lasted until that station closed on October 13, 1950. The Grand Avenue station was a station on the demolished BMT Fulton Street Line in Brooklyn, New York City. It opened on April 24, 1888, and had two tracks and two offset side platforms. It was served by trains of the BMT Fulton Street Line, and until 1920, trains of the BMT Brighton Line. The station was also the easternmost station to share the original Brighton Line trains before branching off to the south at the Franklin Avenue el station, the site of the present-day Franklin Avenue subway station. Steve Breen
Stephen Paul Breen (born April 26, 1970) is a nationally syndicated cartoonist. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning twice, in 1998 and 2009. Biography He graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1988 and attended the University of California, Riverside, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. It was at UCR that he started drawing editorial cartoons for his school paper, ''The Highlander''. In 1991, Breen won the Scripps Howard Charles M. Schulz Award as the top college cartoonist and the John Locher Memorial Award for Outstanding College Editorial Cartoonist. He was influenced by cartoonists such as Jeff MacNelly, Paul Conrad, Pat Oliphant and Don Wright. Breen was about to become a high school history teacher when the ''Asbury Park Press'' offered him a job in the art department in July 1994. Grand Avenue is a Danish rock band formed in 2001. The band consists of Rasmus Walter (vocals, guitar), Niels-Kristian Bærentzen (guitar), Marc Stebbing (bass) and Hjalte Thygesen (drums). History The four band members met at a musical college in London in 1997. Frontman Rasmus Walter and lead guitarist Bærentzen started to write songs together, and with the addition of Stebbing and Thygesen Grand Avenue was formed. The band released a single in 2003 called "What's on Your Mind", which became "Ugens Uundgåelige" (the most played number on the radio station for a week) on Danish Radio P3 and caught the attention of EMI. The Grand Avenue Project is currently under development in the Bunker Hill neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles along Grand Avenue. The project consists of a revitalization of Grand Park and surrounding lots administered by the Grand Avenue Authority, a joint powers authority consisting of Los Angeles County and City.
