Professor Grampy is an animated cartoon character appearing in the ''Betty Boop'' series of shorts produced by Max Fleischer and released by Paramount Pictures. He appeared in nine of the later ''Betty Boop'' cartoons beginning with ''Betty Boop and Grampy'' (1935). He had a starring role in the "Color Classic" ''Christmas Comes But Once A Year'' (1936). Grampy is an ever-cheerful and energetic senior citizen with a bald, dome-shaped head, white beard, and black nose (depicted with a red nose in color productions). One author speculates that the character's design may suggest he is Ko-Ko the Clown in retirement. ''Betty Boop and Grampy'' is a 1935 Fleischer Studios animated short film starring Betty Boop. The short features Grampy in his first appearance. Plot Betty receives an invitation to a party from her elderly relative, Grampy. As she strolls along singing "I'm On My Way to Grampy's", she is joined by two moving men, a fireman and a traffic cop—all who irresponsibly drop everything (including a piano, a burning house and a traffic jam) to go to Grampy's party. Grampy is an eccentric inventor, whose labor-saving devices are of the Rube Goldberg variety. For example, he has a device that moves his entire house to the front entrance whenever the doorbell is rung. ''Christmas Comes But Once a Year'' is a 1936 animated short produced by Fleischer Studios and released on December 4, 1936 by Paramount Pictures. It is part of the ''Color Classics'' series. ''Be Human'' is a 1936 Fleischer Studios animated short film starring Betty Boop and Grampy. It is now in the public domain. Plot Betty Boop is incensed at her farmer neighbor's cruelty to his animals. But the inventive Grampy knows how to teach him a lesson. The abusive farmer has been compared to Billy Joe Gregg, who abused numerous cows and calves at the Conklin Dairy Farms in Ohio in 2010. Song The cartoon features the song ''Be Human'' sung by Betty Boop accompanying herself on piano. Instrumental renditions of the song are also prominent throughout the cartoon. When the animal-abusing farmer winds up on Grampy's punishment treadmill, a phonograph recording of Grampy's voice is heard singing the song. ''Zula Hula'' is a 1937 Fleischer Studios animated short film starring Betty Boop, and featuring Grampy. Due to the use of negative racial stereotypes, this short is seldom screened today. Synopsis Betty and Grampy are on an around-the-world flight when they are forced to crash-land on an apparently deserted island. Betty is upset with their situation, but Grampy quickly invents a number of gadgets that allow them all the comforts of home. Things again take a turn for the worse when a group of cannibals show up. Quick thinking Grampy charms the savages by creating a calliope out of the crashed plane's parts. While the natives are distracted by the music, Grampy and Betty repair their plane and make a hasty escape. Jack Mercer (the voice of Popeye) provides the voice for Irving.Full cast and crew at thIMDb Synopsis Betty Boop is baking a cake, when Irving the practical joker comes for a visit. Betty becomes the victim of such pranks as shaking a false hand and getting squirted in the face. Betty calls on Grampy for help, and he quickly rigs his apartment to counteract Irving's pranks and send him on his way. Irving gets the last laugh, when Grampy lights the candle on the cake. Irving replaced the candle with a firecracker before he left. That last laugh is short-lived, however, when the picture of a warship that Irving is standing next to shoots water at him continuously. List Of Betty Boop Films And Appearances
The following is a list of films and other media in which Betty Boop has appeared. She was featured in 90 theatrical cartoons between 1930 and 1939. All of them were released by many labels but there were no such releases for the Betty Boop cartoons on DVD and Blu-ray, up until 2013 when Olive Films released the non-public domain cartoons in four "Essential Collection" volumes, although they were restored from the original television internegatives that carried the altered opening and closing credits. Volume 1 was released on August 20, 2013, and Volume 2 on September 24, 2013. Volume 3 was released on April 29, 2014, and Volume 4 on September 30, 2014. In May 2022, animator and archivist Steve Stanchfield released a Blu-Ray collection titled "The Other Betty Boop Cartoons, Volume 1" through his label Thunderbean Animation, which features public domain cartoons that were not on the Olive Films sets. Fleischer Studios () is an American animation studio founded in 1929 by brothers Max and Dave Fleischer, who ran the pioneering company from its inception until its acquisition by Paramount Pictures, the parent company and the distributor of its films. In its prime, Fleischer Studios was a premier producer of animated cartoons for theaters, with Walt Disney Productions being its chief competitor in the 1930s. Today, the company is again family owned and oversees the licensing and merchandising for its characters. Fleischer Studios characters included Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, Bimbo, Popeye the Sailor, and Superman.
