The Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement (and its subsequent name changes) has been awarded since 1963. The award is presented to the arranger(s) of the music. Only songs or tracks are eligible, no longer works (e.g. albums). The performing artist does not receive a Grammy, except if he/she is also the arranger. An instrumental is a recording normally without any vocals, although it might include some inarticulate vocals, such as shouted backup vocals in a big band setting. Focus (Stan Getz Album)
''Focus'' is a jazz album recorded in 1961, featuring Stan Getz on tenor saxophone with a string orchestra. The album is a suite which was originally commissioned by Getz from composer and arranger Eddie Sauter. Widely regarded as a high point in both men's careers, Getz later described ''Focus'' as his favorite among his own records. The pair would next collaborate on their soundtrack to the 1965 film ''Mickey One''. Description As noted in the booklet for the 1997 CD reissue, Sauter's orchestration did not include melodies for Getz. Rather, Sauter left spaces in the arrangements in which Getz would improvise. Documentation for the recording dates is incomplete, but the CD booklet reports that those involved in the original sessions recall that Getz recorded live with the strings on about half the songs, while he overdubbed sax solos on the others. Claus Ogerman (born Klaus Ogermann; 29 April 1930 – 8 March 2016) was a German arranger, conductor, and composer best known for his work with Billie Holiday, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Michael Brecker, and Diana Krall. Peter Nero (born Bernard Nierow, May 22, 1934) is an American pianist and pops conductor. He directed the Philly Pops from 1979 to 2013, and has earned two Grammy Awards. Early life Born in Brooklyn, New York, as Bernard Nierow, he started his formal music training at the age of seven. He studied piano under Frederick Bried. By the time he was 14, he was accepted to New York City's High School of Music & Art and won a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music. Joseph Daniel Sherman (September 25, 1926 – March 17, 2017) was an American songwriter, conductor, arranger, publisher and producer. Career Sherman was born in Brooklyn, New York, United States. Joe Sherman's chief collaborators included his brother, Noel, as well as George David Weiss, Sid Wayne, Langston Hughes, and Abby Mann. With his brother as lyricist, he composed "To the Ends of the Earth and "Eso Beso" for Paul Anka and "Juke Box Baby" for Perry Como. The brothers joint composition, " Ramblin' Rose", was a hit for Nat King Cole among others. His brother, Noel, died in 1972. Joe Sherman died on March 17, 2017.
