Grahame Garner
Grahame Garner (19282015) was an Australian photographer and political activist for peace in Brisbane, Queensland. Grahame John Garner was a marine engineer in the merchant navy during the 1940s and 1950s, before becoming a fitter and turner for the Brisbane tramways. Photographic career and political activism Garner took up photography as a hobby forming a Tramways Photographic Society with colleague, Ross Callcott. Their photographs attracted the attention of the Queensland Police's Special Branch, as some of their photographs of Brisbane trams were sent to the Soviet Union as part of the Australian Soviet Friendship Society of which Garner was a member. He organised the last tram ride through Brisbane to celebrate the passing of the tram network. Garner was an active amateur photographer and amassed a huge collection of photographs of subjects ranging from his dogs, trams in Brisbane and political marches during the 1960s. Trams In Brisbane
The Brisbane tramway network served the city of Brisbane, Australia, between 1885 and 1969. It ran on standard gauge track. The electric system was originally energised to 500 volts, and subsequently increased to 600 volts. All tramcars built in Brisbane up to 1938 had an open design. This proved so popular, especially on hot summer nights, that the trams were used as fundraisers and often chartered right up until the last service by social groups. Most trams operated with a two-person crew – a driver (or motorman) and a conductor, who moved about the tram collecting fares and issuing tickets. The exceptions to this arrangement were on the Gardens line (Lower Edward Street) where the short duration of the trip meant it was more effective for passengers to simply drop their fare into a fare box as they entered the tram; and the "one man cars" which operated in the early 1930s (see below). Special Branch is a label customarily used to identify units responsible for matters of national security and Intelligence (information gathering), intelligence in Policing in the United Kingdom, British, Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth, Irish, and other police forces. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA), known as the Australian Communist Party (ACP) from 1944 to 1951, was an Australian political party founded in 1920. The party existed until roughly 1991, with its membership and influence having been in a steady decline since its peak in 1945. Like most communist parties in the west, the party was heavily involved in the labour movement and the trade unions. Charles Lisner
Charles Maurice Lisner OBE (1928 - 1988) was a French-Australian dancer and the founder and first artistic director of the Queensland Ballet. Early life Charles Lisner was born in Paris, France. Lisner emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1937. He started dancing late in life, in his early twenties, and traveled to London where he spent time with the Sadler's Wells Ballet. He later joined the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden. Creation of Lisner Ballet Academy and Queensland Ballet In 1953, Lisner returned to Queensland after the death of his father, and established the Lisner Ballet Academy with virtually no money. From that academy grew Lisner's privately owned company, the Lisner Ballet, which was established in 1960. In 1962, the name was changed to the Queensland Ballet. The Queensland Ballet, founded in 1960 by Charles Lisner OBE, is the premier ballet company of Queensland, Australia and is based in Brisbane. Queensland Ballet is one of only three full-time, professional classical ballet companies in Australia. A note is a string of text placed at the bottom of a page in a book or document or at the end of a chapter, volume, or the whole text.
