The Institute for Medieval Studies (IMS) at the University of Leeds, founded in 1967, is a leading research and teaching institute in the field of medieval studies. It is home to the International Medieval Bibliography and the International Medieval Congress. History Precursors Although Leeds University had seen lively intellectual activity in medieval studies throughout its history, the first formal precursor to the Institute for Medieval Studies was Leeds's 'Medieval Group', founded in October 1951. The group would gather to hear academic papers on relevant topics, preceded by 'sherry in the Chairman's room' and followed 'by supper'. Early chairs were John Le Patourel (1951–71), J. R. Peter Meredith
Peter Meredith (born Ross-on-Wye 1933) was, prior to retirement, a lecturer in medieval and early modern English language and literature. He was editor of the journal '' Leeds Studies in English'' from around 1978 to 1981 and chaired its editorial board from 1985 until his retirement. Leeds University Union (LUU) is the representative body for the students at the University of Leeds, England. It is led by a group of student sabbatical officers known as the Student Executive, and supported by around 140 full-time staff members, with up to 500 student members of staff at peak times, as well as hundreds of dedicated volunteers. Alaric Hall
Alaric Hall (born 1979) is a British philologist who is an associate professor of English and director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds. He has, since 2009, been the editor of the academic journal '' Leeds Studies in English'' and its successor ''Leeds Medieval Studies''. Biography Hall received his B.A. in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from the University of Cambridge, his M.Phil. in Medieval Studies from the University of Glasgow, and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Glasgow. His Ph.D. thesis was on elves in Anglo-Saxon England. He has subsequently become an associate professor of English and director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds. Emilia Jamroziak
Emilia Jamroziak is professor of medieval religious history at the University of Leeds. Jamroziak is a specialist in medieval British and European religious history of the 12th to the 16th centuries, the Cistercian order, and frontiers and borders in medieval Europe. She was the director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds from 2016 to 2019. Jamroziak took her BA at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, her MA at Central European University, and her PhD University of Leeds (where her thesis, submitted in 2001, was entitled 'Rievaulx Abbey and its social environment, 1132-1300'). Royal Armouries Museum
The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, is a national museum which displays the National Collection of Arms and Armour. It is part of the Royal Armouries family of museums, with other sites at the Royal Armouries' traditional home in the Tower of London, and the National Collection of Artillery at Fort Nelson, Hampshire. Richard Morris (archaeologist)
Richard Morris, OBE (born 8 October 1947) is an English archaeologist and historian who specialises in the study of churchyard and battlefield archaeology. Having been involved in the discipline since the early 1970s, he has worked at a number of British universities, including the University of Leeds and the University of Huddersfield, as well as publishing a series of books on the subject of archaeology. He has also held a number of significant positions within the British archaeological community. He was director of the Council for British Archaeology from 1991 to 1999, and was Commissioner of English Heritage. Morris studied English at Oxford University before proceeding to study music at the University of York, until he finally decided to go into archaeology as an academic vocation. Simon Forde is a publisher and medievalist, noted as the former editor of the ''International Medieval Bibliography'' and founder of the International Medieval Congress.
