Goyescas (film)
''Goyescas'' is a 1942 Spanish musical film directed by Benito Perojo and starring Imperio Argentina, Rafael Rivelles and Armando Calvo. The film is an adaptation of the 1916 zarzuela ''Goyescas'' by Enrique Granados, and also drew inspiration from the work of the artist Francisco Goya. The film was part of the popular trend for operetta films in Europe during the era. Perojo had been planning the production for around a decade before it was ultimately made.Bentley p.106 The film received the Biennale Award at the 1942 Venice Film Festival. Synopsis Set in Madrid, between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th. The Countess of Gualda and the famous songwriter Petrilla are very physically similar, so much so that many people confuse them. But one day they discover that they love the same man, the Marquis of Nuévalos, a terrible rivalry will arise between them that they will resolve based on songs and episodes that recreate Goya's paintings. Benito Perojo
Benito Perojo González (Madrid, 14 June 1894 – Madrid, 11 November 1974) was a successful Spanish film director and film producer. Biography Son of José Perojo Figueras (1850–1908), a journalist and politician of Cuban origin, by his wife, Ana Cortina Fuentes (1871–1954). On 18 July 1966 he was honoured by the Caballero Gran Cruz de la Orden del Mérito Civil. He died in Madrid on 11 November 1974 aged 80 and he was survived by his daughter Carmen Perojo Carreras. Enrique Granados
Pantaleón Enrique JoaquÃn Granados y Campiña (27 July 1867 – 24 March 1916), commonly known as Enric Granados in Catalan or Enrique Granados in Spanish, was a composer of classical music, and concert pianist from Catalonia, Spain. His most well-known works include ''Goyescas'', the ', and '' MarÃa del Carmen''. As a young man he studied piano in Barcelona, where his teachers included Francisco Jurnet and Joan Baptista Pujol. In 1887 he went to Paris to study. Antonio Casas (11 November 1911 – 14 February 1982) was a Spanish footballer turned film actor who appeared in film between 1941 and his death in 1982. Casas originally began as a footballer for Atlético Madrid, but entered film in 1941 and made nearly 170 appearances in film and TV between then and 1982. He appeared in ''A Pistol for Ringo'' in 1965 and Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Western ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'' in 1966. One of his best-known roles was in Luis Buñuel's ''Tristana''.
