Margaret Gowing
Margaret Mary Gowing (), (26 April 1921 – 7 November 1998) was an English historian. She was involved with the production of several volumes of the officially sponsored ''History of the Second World War'', but was better known for her books, commissioned by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, covering the early history of Britain's nuclear weapons programmes: ''Britain and Atomic Energy 1939–1945'', published in 1964, and the two-volume ''Independence and Deterrence: Britain and Atomic Energy 1945–52'', published in 1974. Through her work in the Cabinet Office from 1945 to 1959, she knew personally many of the people involved. As historian archivist at the UK Atomic Energy Authority from 1959 to 1966 she had access to the official papers and files of the British nuclear weapons programmes. Gowings was a department store chain in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, established in 1868. Set on several floors, it specialized in men's casual clothing, camping gear and novelty items. It had a men's barber and a dining restaurant. Company history In 1863, John Gowing opened a drapery business in Crown Street, East Sydney, New South Wales. He entered into partnership on 4 November 1868 with his brother Preston Robert Gowing, who had been working as a storekeeper in Victoria. They set up the Mercery and Glove Depot, at 318 George Street, which John managed for £200 per annum plus half the profits of the business. This store was located on the corner of Market Street and George Street and the site was redeveloped in 1929 by John's son, Preston Lanchester Gowing, both as an investment and prime retail location. John Gowing
John Ellis Symonds Gowing (1835 – 2 October 1908) was an English-born Australian retailer and draper, who founded the eponymous men's department store Gowings, originally the company specialized in ladies gloves and silk umbrellas. Early years and career Gowing was born at Cranley Hall, Eye, Suffolk, England, and was the eldest son of 10 children of Ellis Symonds Gowing, a farmer, and his wife Charlotte Lancaster. At 24 years of age, Gowing emigrated to Sydney with £400, on the American ship, the ''Commonwealth''. A year later his parents and siblings followed him to Australia. On arrival in Sydney, Gowing worked on the harbour in a maritime warehouse. Soon after, he commenced working in retail with David Jones. Nik Keith Gowing (born 1951) is a British television journalist. Overview Nik Gowing was educated at the Simon Langton Grammar School in Canterbury and Latymer Upper School in London, followed by the University of Bristol. A foreign affairs specialist and presenter at ITN from 1978, Gowing became Diplomatic Editor for the flagship ''Channel 4 News'' from 1989. During his time with the BBC, Gowing has since presented '' The World Today'' (1996–2000), ''Europe Direct'', ''HARDtalk'', ''Dateline London'', as well as ''Simpson's World''. Sir Lawrence Burnett Gowing (21 April 1918 – 5 February 1991) was an English artist, writer, curator and teacher. Initially recognised as a portrait and landscape painter, he quickly rose to prominence as an art educator, writer, and eventually, curator and museum trustee. He was described as a prominent member of the "English Establishment". As a student of art history he was largely self-taught. Early life Born in Hackney, East London to Horace Gowing, a draper, and his wife, Louise, his first painting of note, ''Mare Street, Hackney'', made reference to his father's shop. After attending Quaker schools Downs School at Colwall, Herefordshire and Leighton Park School, in 1938 he worked with William Coldstream at the Euston Road School; Coldstream was a friend for life. Eric Gowing
Eric Austin Gowing (11 March 1913 - 3 June 1981) was the seventh Anglican Bishop of Auckland. His episcopate spanned a long period during the second half of the 20th century. Born in Sydney, Australia, Gowing was educated at North Sydney High School and the universities of Sydney and Oxford, before beginning his ordained ministry as a curate at St Mary's Deane Stafford. After an incumbency at St Peter's Norbiton, he emigrated to New Zealand in 1950 where he was Vicar of Merivale and Archdeacon of Christchurch before his appointment to the episcopal see of Auckland in 1960; he was consecrated a bishop on 1 November 1960. He was one of the last bishops to wear the traditional frock coat, hose and gaiters. ''The Diary of a Nobody'' is an English comic novel written by the brothers George and Weedon Grossmith, with illustrations by the latter. It originated as an intermittent serial in ''Punch'' magazine in 1888–89 and first appeared in book form, with extended text and added illustrations, in 1892. The ''Diary'' records the daily events in the lives of a London clerk, Charles Pooter, his wife Carrie, his son William Lupin, and numerous friends and acquaintances over a period of 15 months. Before their collaboration on the ''Diary'', the brothers each pursued successful careers on the stage. George originated nine of the principal comedian roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan operas over 12 years from 1877 to 1889.
