Governor Of Negros Occidental
The governor of Negros Occidental is the local chief executive and head of the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental. Along with the Governor of Negros Oriental and the Mayor of the highly urbanized city of Bacolod, he serves as one of the chief executives of Negros Island in the Philippines. Formation Before independence, the position had been occupied by appointed Spanish military commanders that also serve the role of Governor since the transfer of the capital to Bacolod in 1849. Previously, the local chief executive post was vested on the "Corregidor," or the commander of the military outpost, in the two previous capitals of Ilog, Negros Occidental and Himamaylan. Negros was an administrative division of the Philippines, existing as a military district from 1734 to 1865, and a politico-military province from 1865 to 1890. History Upon the arrival of Spaniards, Miguel López de Legazpi placed the island of Negros and its nearby islands and islets under the jurisdiction of the governor of Oton on Panay in the 1600s. The islands then became a Spanish military district in 1734 and the municipality of Ilog served as its first capital. The seat of government was later transferred to Himamaylan in 1795 until Bacolod became the capital in 1849. In 1865, it was raised into a politico-military province. Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda (died 1719) served as the 37th Governor-General of the Captaincy General of the Philippines from 1717 until his assassination. Juan Manuel de la Peña Bonifaz (died 1669) was a Spanish politician who served as the ad interim 26th governor and captain-general of the Philippines from September 28, 1668 to September 24, 1669. Diego de Salcedo, a Spanish army officer during the Eighty Years' War, was the Governor-General of the Philippines from 1663 to 1668. He reinforced the army of the archipelago and promoted trade with America. Juan Cerezo de Salamanca was interim Spanish governor of the Philippines from August 2, 1633 to June 25, 1635. Cerezo de Salamanca was named interim governor of the Philippines by the viceroy of New Spain, Rodrigo Pacheco y Osorio, marqués de Cerralvo to replace Juan Niño de Tabora, who had died in office July 22, 1632.
