The government of Columbus, Ohio, headquartered at Columbus City Hall in Downtown Columbus, is organized into a mayor-council system. The mayor is responsible for the administration of city government. The Columbus City Council is a unicameral body consisting of seven members elected or appointed at-large. The city has numerous government agencies, responsible for public education, health, and safety; emergency services; recreational facilities; sanitation; water supply; and welfare services. Columbus Division Of Fire
The Columbus Division of Fire (CFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to Columbus, Ohio. The department operates 35 stations; the newest station opened March 2020. The stations are divided into seven battalions. The Columbus Division of Fire oversees 35 engine companies, 16 ladder companies, 5 rescue companies, and 40 EMS transport vehicles as well as several special units and reserve apparatus. It is staffed by a minimum of 292 personnel during daytime hours (first 12 hours) and 331 during nighttime hours (second 12 hours). The department also oversees 39 medic companies. There are 1,592 uniformed and 70 civilian professionals serving the citizens of Columbus, Ohio. The department is accredited by the Committee on Fire Accreditation International, granted in 2007. It is the largest police department in the state of Ohio, and among the twenty-five largest in the United States.Based upon the number of sworn law enforcement officers. The Beacon Building is an office building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It is located in the Columbus Civic Center area, diagonal to Columbus City Hall. The mid-century modern building was designed by Benham, Richards and Armstrong and completed in 1957. It was first owned by the Beacon Mutual Indemnity Co., and was sold in 1978 to the City of Columbus, which used it for government offices until 2018. History Construction began around 1955, with an expected opening on May 1, 1957. The building was completed in 1957. It was purchased by the city in 1978 for just over $2 million. Lorenzo English (May 22, 1819 – March 14, 1888) was a Whig and later Republican politician from the U.S. state of Ohio. He served as the 20th mayor of Columbus, Ohio and the 18th person to serve in that office. He served Columbus prior to the American Civil War for five terms spanning eleven years. His successor was Wray Thomas after 1861. Biography He was born in Herkimer County, New York on May 22, 1819. His parents were John and Laura S. English. Central Market was a public market in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The market operated from 1814 to 1966, was the location of Columbus's first city hall for two decades, from 1850 to 1872. It moved three times, each time into successively larger buildings. The third market building stood the longest time, from 1850 to 1966, when it was demolished as part of the Market-Mohawk Urban Renewal project. Capitol Square is a public square in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. The square includes the Ohio Statehouse, its Capitol Grounds, as well as the buildings and features surrounding the square. Columbus City Hall (1872–1921)
Columbus City Hall was the city hall for Columbus, Ohio, located on Capitol Square in the city's downtown. The building served the mayor and city council from its construction in 1872 until its demolition in 1921. The building was the founding site for the United Mine Workers of America in 1890. In 1928, the site became home to the Ohio Theatre, and the current Columbus City Hall opened nearby.
