Goulburn Valley Football Association
The Goulburn Valley Football Association (GVFA) is an Australian rules football competition that was first established in 1888 in the Goulburn Valley of Victoria, Australia, with the foundation clubs being Cobram, Muckatah, Nathalia, Numurkah, Wunghnu and Yarroweyah. This football competition was separate to the Goulburn Valley District Football Association that was formed in 1893, that is still active today and now called the Goulburn Valley Football League. History The original GVFA was a football association that catered for the smaller rural towns of the Goulburn Valley region until 1931, when it was superseded by the Murray Football League when it was first established in 1931. There was another Goulburn Valley Football Association, in 1890 and 1891, comprising the following teams – Baldwinsville, Mooroopna, Shepparton, Tatura and Undera, with Mooroopna winning the title in 1890 and Undera defeating Mooroopna to win the 1891 – Elder's Hotel (Undera) Medals. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. John McLeish
John McLeish (19 December 1926 – 10 December 2005) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). McLeish's father, Maurie, played VFL football for St Kilda. After a season and a half with Essendon, McLeish returned to the team he was recruited from, Yea, where he was appointed captain-coach. They won a premiership in his first season in the role. McLeish continued to play with Yea until 1954. Congupna Football Club
The Congupna Football & Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Road'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the town of Congupna located just north of Shepparton, Victoria that currently compete in the Murray FNL. History Congupna Football Club formed in 1956 and won the premiership of the Kyabram & District Football League in its first season. Congupna then transferred across to the Benalla Tungamah Football League in 1962. The club then joined the Murray Football League in 1997. Congupna is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. The town is in the City of Greater Shepparton local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne and north of the regional centre of Shepparton. At the 2021 census, Congupna had a population of 620. History Congupna, known also by the name ''Koongoopna'', was first established about 8 km north of its present location. Congupna Post Office opened there on 1 December 1881, was renamed Congupna Township around 1909 and closed in 1953. The Cobram Football Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the regional city of Cobram located in north east Victoria. Cobram teams currently compete in the Murray FNL. History Formed in 1887, Cobram began in the Goulburn Valley Football Association(GVFA) in 1888. The club also had short stints in the Murray Border Football Association and Federal District Football Association. Cobram FC also won two additional premierships in 1892 and 1893 as per a letter to the ''Cobram Courier'' by former player, Jack McNamara in 1903, who wrote that he had possession of the actual "Gedye's Victoria Hotel Cup" premiership cups. Barooga Football Club
The Barooga Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Hawks'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the town of Barooga located in the Riverina district of New South Wales. The club was formed in 1894 and initially played in the Murray Border Football Association in 1894. When the club won the Federal District Football Association premiership against Cobram Football Club in 1897, they were known as "The Boomerangs" and wore a red and white uniform.
