Gottfried Johann Schädel
Johann Gottfried Schaedel (german: Johann Gottfried Schädel) was a German Baroque architect who worked in Russia and Ukraine. Schaedel was born in 1680 in Wandesbek, Duchy of Holstein, Holy Roman Empire (now part of Hamburg). In 1713, Prince Alexander Menshikov paid him 400 Reichsthaler (384 rubles) to move to Saint Petersburg with his family. After Menshikov's fall from grace, Schaedel settled in Moscow where he worked in tandem with the Italian artist Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. In 1731, Schaedel accepted an invitation from the Archbishop of Kiev and moved to Kiev where he designed the great belltowers of Kiev Pechersk Lavra and Sophia Cathedral, the Klov Palace and other notable buildings which altered the city's skyline. Schaedel received no new commissions after 1744 and died in Kiev in poverty in 1752. Saint Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev
Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, Ukraine, is an architectural monument of Kyivan Rus. The former cathedral is one of the city's best known landmarks and the first heritage site in Ukraine to be inscribed on the World Heritage List along with the Kyiv Cave Monastery complex. Aside from its main building, the cathedral includes an ensemble of supporting structures such as a bell tower and the House of Metropolitan. In 2011 the historic site was reassigned from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. One of the reasons for the move was that both Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kyiv Pechersk Lavra are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Program as one complex, while in Ukraine the two were governed by different government entities. Great Lavra Bell Tower
The Great Lavra Bell Tower or the Great Belfry ( uk, Велика Лаврська дзвіниця, russian: Большая Лаврская колокольня) is the main bell tower of the ancient cave monastery of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. It is one of the most notable buildings of the Kyiv skyline ( see picture). The bell tower was the highest free-standing bell tower at the time of its construction in 1731–1745. The Menshikov Palace (russian: Меншиковский дворец) is a Petrine Baroque edifice in Saint Petersburg, situated on Universitetskaya Embankment of the Bolshaya Neva on Vasilyevsky Island.It is not to be confused with the Menshikov Palace in Oranienbaum, Russia, built by the same architects around the same time.
