Arthur Goschen
Major-General Arthur Alec Goschen (6 January 1880 – 28 June 1975) was a British Army officer who served as an Area Commander during the Second World War. Family and education Goschen was born in London, the child of Henry Goschen (1837–1932) and Augusta Eleanor Shakerley, niece of Sir Charles Shakerley, 1st Baronet. Henry Goschen was the younger brother of George Goschen, 1st Viscount Goschen. Goschen's great-grandfather was prominent publisher and printer Georg Joachim Göschen of Leipzig, Kingdom of Saxony, whose third son Wilhelm Heinrich (William Henry) Göschen (1793–1866) came to England in 1814 and the next year co-founded the merchant banking firm ''Frühling & Göschen'', of Leipzig and London. Sir William Edward Goschen, 1st Baronet, (18 July 1847 – 20 May 1924) was a British diplomat. Background and education Goschen was born at Eltham, England, the twelfth child and sixth son of Wilhelm Heinrich Göschen, originally of Leipzig, Saxony, and Henrietta Ohmann, who was born in London. At the time of his birth his father was 54. The Liberal Unionist politician Lord Goschen was Goschen's elder brother. He was educated at Rugby and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He twice represented Oxford at real tennis, played five matches of first-class cricket as a right-handed batsman for the University of Oxford and throughout his life was a keen sportsman. Georg Joachim Göschen (22 April 1752Several sources list 22 December 1752 as his date of birth; while others list 22 April 1752 as the date he was baptised. – 5 April 1828) was a German publisher and bookseller in Leipzig, Kingdom of Saxony, notable for typography and his publications of music and philosophy. He was the patriarch of the Goschen family, whose English branch rose to prominence as bankers and politicians, including the Viscounts Goschen and Goschen baronets. Early life Born Jürgen Joachim Göschen, he was the second child of merchant Johann Reinhard and Gebeta Göschen. Johann's father, Emanuel, was a doctor who had settled in Bremen. George Joachim Goschen, 1st Viscount Goschen, PC, DL, FBA (10 August 1831 – 7 February 1907) was a British statesman and businessman best remembered for being "forgotten" by Lord Randolph Churchill. He was initially a Liberal, then a Liberal Unionist before joining the Conservative Party in 1893. George Joachim Goschen, 2nd Viscount Goschen, (15 October 1866 – 24 July 1952), was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament for East Grinstead from 1895 to 1906 and as Governor of Madras from 1924 to 1929. Giles John Harry Goschen, 4th Viscount Goschen (born 16 November 1965), is a British Conservative politician. Goschen is the son of John Goschen, 3rd Viscount Goschen, by his second wife Alvin England. He was educated at Heatherdown School, near Ascot in Berkshire, and Eton. He succeeded his father in the viscountcy in 1977 at the age of eleven. After a brief stint as a city stockbroker he spent time in Zambia with his future wife Sarah Horsnail to work for a conservation agency, but returned to Britain. John Alexander Goschen, 3rd Viscount Goschen (7 July 1906 – 22 March 1977), was a British Conservative politician. Goschen was the second son of the Hon. Sir William Henry Goschen, second son of George Goschen, 1st Viscount Goschen, and was educated at Eton College and Sandhurst. He was a Colonel in the Grenadier Guards and served with the British Military Mission to Greece from 1945 to 1947. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his military service in 1944. He succeeded his uncle to the viscountcy in 1952 and took his seat on the Conservative benches in the House of Lords. He served under Harold Macmillan, Sir Alec Douglas-Home and Edward Heath as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard (Deputy Chief Whip in the House of Lords) from 1962 to 1964 and from 1970 to 1971.
